When traveling on Herff Road on a Saturday morning, it is hard to miss the traffic turning into Herff Farm. Every Saturday, you can see folks pulling into the farm and descending onto the property.
The Farmers Market at Herff Farm was created to get people connected to nature to join in caring for our environment. To grow our community, we’ve extended the season of our farmers market by adding on a winter market. In 2022, our market season will begin to run year-round to meet the growing demand for goods from our local vendors.
We are proud to have seen a growing interest in the Farmers Market at Herff Farm over the last few years, especially during the pandemic. When securing food was challenging, our vendors could supply many folks with substantial locally grown items.
As we transition from winter to spring, we want nothing more than to thank our visitors and regular vendors who braved the fickle weather early on this year. Every Saturday morning, the vendors roll in with their trailers, tubs of goodies and crates full of handmade crafts ready to greet you with a smile. They sell everything from homemade soaps to handmade bread, fresh jams, locally roasted coffee, artisan crafts, leather goods and beautiful native plants.
We can better support the small, family-owned businesses that call the Farmers Market at Herff Farm home on Saturday mornings by extending the market season.
Like many of our regular market shoppers, the vendors come from all over the Hill Country and San Antonio. We are excited to create more opportunities to connect people to their food sources, make sustainable living more attainable and help small businesses thrive in these uncertain times.
Boerne has long been a gateway to the Hill Country from San Antonio, and the location of the Farmers Market at the Herff Farm harkens back to a time when it was even more rural. Rather than being set in the middle of a city or a parking lot, this market takes place on the picturesque historic Herff Farm with vendors’ tents set up beneath sprawling Live Oaks, with a 19th century German farmhouse and windmill as a backdrop.
Now, every Saturday when the metal gate of Herff Farm opens, people explore the trail that hugs the 20-acre Pollinator Meadow, eventually leading down to the Cibolo Creek. Families can stroll through the gardens and meet the chickens that call Herff Farm their home. We have plenty of programming available for children, families, and adults planned for the season.
The feeling of community at the farmers market has never been stronger. And extending our market season has been met with an outpouring of support from the Boerne community.
As we prepare for the spring season, we are also looking for new folks to join our team. The Cibolo is currently hiring a Farm Programs manager and a Farmers Market coordinator; both positions are stationed at our Herff Farm campus. Interested applicants can learn more about these job openings on www.cibolo.org.
