January 17, 1947 – June 18, 2023
Major
Kathryn Sue (Quinn) Major passed away peacefully on June 18, 2023, after a long illness in her home in Boerne, Texas. She was born in Austin, Texas, on January 17, 1947, to Lewis Elmo Quinn Jr. and Margaret Evelyn (Greenawalt) Quinn, both now deceased. She grew into adulthood in San Antonio, Texas, and graduated from McCollum High School. Kathy subsequently earned her bachelor’s degree from Southwest Texas State University, and later received her master’s degree at St Mary’s University during her teaching career.
Kathy met Oscar Lynn Major at a college party, and later they were married at Palm Heights Methodist Church in San Antonio on June 14, 1969. Oscar joined the US Army and advanced through Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning in Georgia. They were stationed at a number of bases both in and outside of the United States, Ft. Benning GA, Ft. Richardson AK, Ft. Lewis WA, Ft. Sill OK, Ft. Hood TX, Ft. Leavenworth KS, Kreuzberg Germany, Ft. Bliss TX, Ft. Carson CO, and Camp Stanley, TX. Kathy and Oscar lived the Army life for 23 years until his retirement, and Kathy was a loving Army wife and mother, raising their two children Melissa and Brent during this time.
After her children were grown, Kathy began a teaching career of 22 years in San Antonio, starting at Fairway Middle School, where she was the only Computer Literacy teacher, then to Ysleta High School, and finally John Jay High School where she was the Math Department Coordinator. She retired in 2010 from teaching and could finally focus on applying her many craft skills to projects for herself and for her ‘adopted’ grandchildren Maia, Layla, Jovie and Stevie as well as other friends and family. Her favorite crafts were painting, scrapbooking and sewing doll clothes. She had the imagination, supplies and equipment to prove her talents and skills. She loved to entertain and cook for family and friends; no reason was too small. Kathy was nothing but kind, generous, loving, giving and fun-loving her entire life to everyone she knew.
Kathy is survived by her husband, retired Lt. Colonel Oscar L. Major; her daughter, Melissa Kaye (Major) Jimenez; and her sisters and their families, Rose Alice Kuhn (husband Richard L. Kuhn) and Laura Lee McAuley (husband John McAuley and son Connor McAuley). Additionally, she is survived by many others whom she loved, including her daughter’s fiancé, Jerry Cardwell and his family Jerrett, Jacob, Joshua, Jack and Kara; and Kathy’s ‘adopted’ families Jeannette Lopez and Jason English, and daughters Layla, Jovie and Stevie, as well as Nicole and Ron Meneses, and daughter Maia. Her husband’s family (there are many!) played a big part in sharing their lives with her, offering much fun and love throughout the years. She is survived as well by many friends from her teaching career and Army years, who have shown love and support for her. She is predeceased by parents, Lewis Elmo Quinn Jr. and Margaret Evelyn (Greenawalt) Quinn, and son Brent Austin Major.
