Free tax service remains available at library

We are currently taking appointments for people who would like to take advantage of the free tax service we have offered each year for at least 13 years.

We are currently taking appointments for people who would like to take advantage of the free tax service we have offered each year for at least 13 years.

The fine folks at AARP assist federal taxpayers of all ages with filing their returns electronically. Please don’t hesitate to call us at 830-249-3053 to set up a time. The volunteer tax preparers are on hand Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until April 13.

You are required to complete the IRS intake form, which can be picked up at the library prior to the day of your appointment. If you don’t care to come in to pick it up, we will bring it to you curbside. Just call from your car when you arrive.

Library exhibit

So, why did our county get named Kendall? We know it’s named after George Wilkins Kendall, who can be found in the Boerne Cemetery, but he was born in New Hampshire and lived most of his life in Louisiana, before coming to the Boerne area.

In partnership with the Kendall County Historical Commission, the library is hosting a special program, “Kendall of Kendall,” at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, to answer that question as we tell you his story and bring to life one of the more intriguing characters from 19th century Texas.

Born in 1809 in New Hampshire, Kendall was by turns a printer, a writer, a prisoner of war, a renowned author in his time and a sheep farmer. He was considered the nation’s first war correspondent and spent time in the company of other historical figures.

He apprenticed with Horace Greely, hosted a dinner for Frederick Law Olmstead and engaged with Mexican President Santa Anna. He married Adeline del Valcourt later in life after meeting in Paris, France, and brought this young woman back to the wild frontier of Texas.

In addition to this fascinating program on March 5, we will also host a gallery exhibit on the first floor for the entire month. It will give visitors a more in-depth look at the life and writings of Mr. Kendall.

Sound meditation returns

We are excited to announce the return of our Second-Tuesday Sound Meditation program on Tuesday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m. This free activity for adults features the sounds of the digeridoo, Tibetan crystal bowls, poetry and Sacred Silence.

Facilitators Steve Daniel and Susan will take you on a path of spiritual exploration, meditation and a profound appreciation for the natural world. This time of relaxation takes place in the library lobby.

Featured children’s programs

At 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, little ones can enjoy our Lucky Leprechaun Storytime at the Herff Farmhouse on 33 Herff Road. We will feature a tale, tunes, a craft and tasty treats.

At 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, the team from Mathnasium of Boerne will host a special STEM event featuring hands-on activities and a special tasty treat.

At 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, get pumped for reading while reading to a pup! Two dogs will be here for reading time, so be sure to stop by and catch up with Dwight and Buddy.

At 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 26, a crowd favorite will once again visit the library. Be sure to bring the whole family to a toe-tapping, hand-clapping experience with the Inishfree School of Irish Dancing.

Fab food program

At 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 31, help us celebrate our 70th anniversary for a tasty trip back in time, with our Fabulous Foods of the Fifties celebration. Staff member and cooking queen Alison Topper, along with her court of kitchen helpers, will feature samples of popular food from the times, recipes to share, tips on preparation and some interesting culinary history. Join us!

Cake pans coming

Are you a baking enthusiast or would you like to try your hand at creating a beautiful cake? We are about to make it easier for you!

The library will soon make more than 30 cake pans available for patrons to check out and use at home. There are the regular geometric shapes, but we also offer themed cake pans.

We love providing unusual collections that add a little whimsy to people’s lives, so we hope you enjoy this latest addition. They should be available by mid-March.

Lobby tech assistance

Did you know that we no longer offer computer classes but instead provide you customized assistance on your particular device? Each day, Monday through Thursday, you have the opportunity to ask one of our knowledgeable Tech Team members questions that are nagging you or issues that are preventing you from having a pleasant tech experience.

Oemuer Samsa is available in the lobby on Mondays at 10 a.m., Leah Mayo can assist you on Tuesdays at 10 a.m., Alicia Owens (Teacup Techie) is on hand at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, Alison Topper will be happy to share her knowledge on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. and finally on Thursdays at 2 p.m. Carlos Guerrero is the guy to see. This walk-in service is totally free to the public.

Staff Development Day

The library was closed Monday, February 21, for Presidents’ Day, but library staff was hard at work learning new ways to serve you even better! We did let our hair down occasionally with art projects and meditation, but we also learned how to use our individual strengths to become a team of library superheroes.

OK, we might be overselling it a bit, but we do hope your experiences here will just get better and better.
