The Boerne Champion girls seemed to have turn the corner on its 3-point shooting.

After struggling early in the season from long range, the Lady Chargers have shot it well in its last two district games.

Champion was 9 of 14 from the 3-point line against Seguin last Friday and then on Tuesday they went 5 for 9 against the Lady Antlers.

The results have been victories and Tuesday’s 46-34 win over Kerrville Tivy slides the Lady Chargers into second place in 26-5A.

Champion is 19-5 overall and 6-1 in district. They close out the first round Friday at Buda Johnson.

The Chargers knocked down all five 3s in the first half of Tuesday’s contest. Adriana Barreiro opened the scoring by hitting a 3-pointer and then Madyson Marquard heated up from the outside and drained a 3 in the first quarter and sank three more to start the scoring in the second to help Champion open up a 23-9 lead with 3:09 left in the first half.

It was Champion’s outside shooting, especially Marquard hitting three straight 3s, that forced Kerrville Tivy to switch from a zone to a man-to-man defense to guard the perimeter better.

“I was worried about their defense because that’s what they live and die by right now,” Chargers coach Marsha Hammond said. “We knew they were going to pressure or use that 1-2-2 trap and then Madyson got hot and then they went man.”

Tivy’s ability to get to the free-throw line kept them in the game. Champion was leading 25-13 at the half and 9 of Tivy’s 13 points came at the line.

At one point in the second half, Kerrville had 26 points and half – or 13 – came from their foul shooting.

Champion’s biggest lead occurred in the fourth quarter when they opened up a 44-26 advantage thanks to three free throws from Adri Davenport, but the Lady Antlers finally starting making shots and went on a 9-2 run, however they never got closer than 12 points.

Kerrville outscored the Chargers in the fourth quarter, 12-11, but it was the only period where they produced more offense.

Hammond said their defense forced Tivy into some tough shots.

“I thought we did a good job defensively. Our defense was good in the first half, but not as good in the second half,” she said. “We just can’t relax on them, we had something like a 20-point lead and then it went to 12 just like that.”

After playing Johnson on Friday, the Lady Chargers open the second round of district at New Braunfels Canyon on Tuesday, the only team to beat them in league play so far.

Hammond said a key will be their outside shooting.

“We were 0 for 16 (from the 3-point line) the last time we played them and it was an 8-point game,” she said.

Marquard led the Chargers with 14 points, Kristen Borgerding and Khiara Flugence were tough in the paint and scored 10 points each, Barreiro finished with 7 points, Davenport made three free throws for 3 points and Kendall Skipper hit for 2.

Flugence grabbed 10 rebounds, Barreiro dished out 3 assists and Marquard had 3 steals.
