Monette Sue Schweers O’Day

Monette Sue Schweers O’Day

February 26, 1937 – February 10, 2022

In the early morning hours of February 10, 2022, just 16 days before her 85th birthday, our precious mom, Mimi, aunt, sister and friend was reunited with her beloved husband, Bob O’Day, and granddaughter Tiffany Neves.

Monette Sue Schweers O’Day was born February 26, 1937, in Hondo Texas. Her love of music began at an early age. She started taking piano lessons at the age of 6, playing for a wedding before becoming a teenager.

Her parents instilled the importance of education. She, along with her mother, Luella and two sisters, Connie and Roxene, were valedictorians of their graduating class at Hondo High School. She was proud of her German heritage, and attending family reunions was always a highlight for her.

She shared that same love of family with her children, and together they enjoyed many vacations with family in Hondo playing in The Patch, having sleepovers in the living room and attending special Christmas Eve services at New Fountain United Methodist Church, where Mom was baptized and confirmed.

Mom attended Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas, on a band scholarship, playing the clarinet. It is there that she met a handsome athlete from Florida who swept her off her feet. Bob and Monette were married on August 28, 1957.

Dad and Mom were campus favorites and both were proud honors graduates. She received a bachelor of science degree in education. They remained loyal alumni to Sul Ross, coordinating golf tournaments for scholarships. Many lifelong friends were made in Alpine.

In 1959, Dad and Mom moved to Snyder, Texas, where they had accepted teaching positions. She was an elementary school teacher for 30 years, teaching first grade and music. They joined First United Methodist Church, where they were active members and selfless volunteers in many ministry areas. Monette had a beautiful soprano singing voice and was a valued member of the church choir.

After retirement from teaching, Monette and Bob enjoyed traveling, volunteering and time with family and friends.

Dad and Mom were married 57 years. She moved to Boerne, Texas, in 2015 after Dad’s death to be closer to family. She quickly made new friends, remained active with water aerobics, assisted elementary students through the tutoring program at FUMC, played the piano at monthly nursing home communion services in Boerne and sang in the choir.

Monette was a life member of the Texas State Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma and the Texas Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed time as a member of Cosmorama Social Club, Musical Coterie Club and served alongside Bob in the Gideons Auxiliary.

She will lovingly be remembered for her poise, beauty, grace and strong faith in God.

Our mom was preceded in death by her husband, Bob O’Day; her parents, Marvin and Luella Schweers; her granddaughter, Tiffany Michelle Neves; and her sister, Connie Leazenby.

She is survived by her children, Mike (Janet)  O’Day of Castroville, Texas, Tammy (Brett) Smith of Comfort, Texas, and Tracey (Steve) Caple of Hickory Creek, Texas; her grandchildren, Lindsay O’Day, Shannon (Jared) O’Day Luckey, Tanner Neves, Desiree (Jared) Smith Anderson and Michael Smith; her great-grandchildren, Adley Anderson, Rhett Anderson, and Adalynn Luckey; her sister, Roxene Brewer of Mansfield, Texas; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

A celebration of Monette’s life was held Saturday, February 19 at 2 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church, Boerne, Texas, with a time of fellowship to follow in the Family Life Center.

Memorials in her honor can be made to the After School Program of First United Methodist Church, 205 James St., Boerne, Texas 78006 or New Fountain United Methodist Church Building Fund, 2980 FM 2676, Hondo, Texas 78861.
