SAN ANTONIO – There’s something about Paul Taylor Field House that just appeals to the Boerne High girls basketball team.

The Lady Greyhounds have played well there and during last year’s playoff run they beat Devine in the fourth round and then Fredericksburg for the regional championship.

Boerne was back at Taylor Field House on Tuesday and turned in another strong performance at that gym, defeating Navarro, 57-37.

BHS (33-4) will see Devine again this year in the fourth but it’ll be at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday at 8 p.m. Friday’s winner faces the Fredericksburg-Somerset winner on Saturday, 3 p.m., for the regional title and a berth to the 4A state tournament.

Boerne coach Amy Ruede said they are comfortable playing at Taylor Field House.

“They like this gym, when we were talking about playing here, they were excited,” she said. “We had a lot of success here last year.”

Boerne hit six 3-pointers in Tuesday’s contest, three in the first quarter alone, to help them jump out to a double-digit lead by the end of the period.

Jamie Ruede knocked a pair of 3s down and Jenna Ruede had the other, while Averi Aaron did her damage in the paint and scored 8 in the first for the 17-6 lead by the time the game went to the second stanza.

Navarro had a player that matched up with Aaron height-wise but that didn’t slow down Aaron who led all scorers at the half with 12 points after BHS won the second, 10-9, for the 27-15 halftime lead.

“She was tall but Averi, as far as physical strength, was going to hold her own against that kid,” Coach Ruede said. “They tried numerous looks trying to stop her and weren’t successful.”

Once the second half started, Navarro cut it to single digits at 29-20, but a Jordyn Lemm 3 bumped the lead back to 12 at 32-20, however the Panthers made it a 10-point game at 32-22 and Coach Ruede called a timeout with 3:37 left in the third just to reset some things.

“It settled us down,” she said. “We were getting out of control and we had missed some defensive assignments and we just needed to take a breath and get back on the same page and play our game.”

The timeout worked and Navarro didn’t score in the final 3:37, while the Hounds went on an 11-0 run to end the quarter. Boerne outscored the Panthers in the quarter, 16-7, for the 43-22 advantage.

Jamie Ruede drained a 3 to start the fourth and it was a 14-0 spurt to push the lead to 46-22 with 7:22 left and basically put it out of reach.

The teams traded buckets in the fourth and Navarro tallied 15 and BHS scored 14. At one point, Coach Ruede had five seniors on the court to close it out.

Aaron scored in all four quarters and finished with 24 points, Jamie Ruede added 19 points and sank four 3s, Lemm finished with 5 points and dropped in a 3, Abby Smith had 4, Jenna Ruede hit a 3 for 3 points and Hannah Rocchio added 2.
