Rotarians support Blessings in a Backpack Program

The Rotary Club of Boerne ( Noontime) is one of three Rotary Clubs that support Blessings in a Backpack, a nonprofit organization. For ten years this organization has been providing weekend food packages consisting of two breakfasts, two lunches and several snacks to children living in poverty who are enrolled in the Federal Meal Program. This year Blessings saw an increase of 25% in the number of requests for assistance. With a yearly budget of $180,000 they provide an average of 575 food packages to students in all 13 Boerne schools. Blessings in a Backpack is part of a national organization that is a 501c3 with an oversight Board of Directors and this local chapter is fully run by volunteers and has no overhead expenses.

The Rotarian motto of “Service Above Self” means that not only does the Noontime Rotary Club regularly provide jars of peanut butter and financial assistance, but Rotarians also help to pack the bags. Peanut butter is an important contribution since it is the most expensive item being put in the backpacks. And financial assistance is critical since the local chapter does not receive financial assistance from the national organization. Feeding over 575 children each weekend is no small financial undertaking. The estimated cost to provide food for one child throughout the year is $300.
