SAN ANTONIO – Boerne High proved the old adage to be true that it isn’t how you start but how you finish that matters.

The Greyhounds overcame a rough start Monday during its playoff opener at Northside Gym against Cuero. The Gobblers were leading at the end of the first quarter, 7-5, but Boerne outscored them over the final three periods, 63-37, on its way to a 68-44 victory.

The Greyhounds improve to 28-6 and play Brazosport in the second round. They’ll meet Friday in Yoakum, 7 p.m.

Boerne’s first point of Tuesday’s game didn’t come until Devin Styles hit a free throw more than three minutes into the contest and its first bucket didn’t occur until Koen Wolff made a 2-pointer halfway through the quarter.

BHS coach Kimble McHone said there were several different factors involved in their slow start.

“I think it was nerves and we missed a couple of bunnies early. I think missing some easy shots put some doubt in our mind,” he said. “As nice as this gym is, the backdrop is a little different and it takes a little bit of time to get into the swing.”

Boerne flipped the switch to start the second quarter. The Greyhounds went on a 16-0 run to start the stanza and it was 21-7 and BHS never trailed from there.

The Hounds received points from Houston Hendrix, Barrett Pape and Styles during their run. Styles hit a pair of 3-pointers during that stretch and McHone said that helped to loosen everybody up.

“When Devin hit a couple of 3s that got us going,” he said.

Cuero attacked Boerne with a man-to-man defense the entire game, but McHone said they kind of prefer teams to play man defense against them.

“I like it when teams man us because our full slate of plays is available,” he said. “It allows us to get Devin some one-on-one inside looks and step out and do some things.”

When the halftime buzzer sounded, the Hounds were ahead, 27-15 after winning the second quarter, 22-8.

It was all Boerne in the second half. Styles nailed a 3-pointer to close the third quarter and the Hounds had outscored the Gobblers in the period, 17-12.

BHS saved its best for last and finished with 24 points in the fourth quarter. Cuero also had its best-scoring stanza of the night and knocked in 17 but Boerne’s lead was always in double digits in the final period.

Styles led all scorers and finished with 24 points, Wolff added 14 and Pape tallied 12 as three Hounds were in double digits. Hendrix netted 8 and scored all of his points in the second, Trevor Agarwal and Colton Hoegemeyer both chipped in with 4 and Sam Waters hit for 2.

“I was proud of them for sticking with it,” McHone said. “They missed a few bunnies but they continued to play.”
