Comfort’s Independence Celebration

COMFORT CHAMBER CHAT

COMFORT CHAMBER CHAT

The seasons of the year bring with them festivities that we anticipate with pleasure, both in the planning and in the joy of celebrating. For example, fall includes the Scarecrow Invasion in Comfort, Halloween and Thanksgiving; winter brings Christmas and the New Year; spring is ushered in with Easter; and summer – without a doubt – highlights American Independence. So, now is the time to get ready for July!

And with July 4th falling on a Tuesday this year, Comfort’s celebration will take place on Saturday, July 1st, thus giving our neighboring communities the opportunity to celebrate with us on Saturday, and then in your hometown on Tuesday – something like a double header. Here’s some of what’s in store for you.

Comfort’s celebration kicks off with the Bicycle Parade for the youngsters at 9:30 am. The younger set is always ready and eager to go, and what fun for parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and neighbors to watch a pack of kiddos take off with all the energy we used to have. Then at 10:00 am the Grand Parade begins. You will see floats, antique cars, jeeps, cyclists and more. Prizes will be awarded in several categories. If either of our parades piques your interest, please do not hesitate to give us a call at 830-9953131. We would love to have you join us!

The parade disbands close to Comfort Park, near Broadway and a block east of Texas 27, just in time for you to partake of our traditional and mouthwatering annual picnic. Just image BBQ brisket, sausage, potato salad, beans, bread, pickles, onions, and good ‘ole Texas tea, served from 11:00 am till 1:30 pm, and catered by Food for the Soul. All this for $15, and to top it off, there will be a pie contest – red (cherry), white (apple) and blue (blueberry) – and slices are sold after the judging has taken place.

In addition, local vendors will have snacks and other treats for your enjoyment, and soda, water and beer are also offered for sale. You will not go home hungry. By the way, applications for the pie contest are also available. Don’t hesitate to bring your best creation to Comfort Park on Saturday, July 1, by 9:30 a.m.

The Miss Comfort Court Pageant will take place at noon during the Independence Day Celebration. Both the outgoing and incoming courts will participate in the parade and then in the pageant. Serving on the Court is a wonderful experience for these young women, as well as an important scholarship opportunity.

The event continues until 3:00 pm with a Silent Auction, live music by the Drugstore Cowboys, outdoor games and activities for the kids including facepainting, and vendors who will offer their handcrafted wares. And just a few words about Silent Auctions. Some of the most interesting and one-of-a-kind items are offered that make this such a lot of fun. You just never know what you will find, and perusing the tables over and over is a delight.

So, plan to join us in Comfort on Saturday, July 1st, for a great time honoring an important event: American Independence! Call us for more information and check out our website at www.comfortchamber. com.

In the meantime, while you are getting all your ducks lined up for Comfort’s Independence Day Celebration, keep in mind that on the second Tuesday of each month from May through October, Gaddis Methodist and the Comfort Chamber sponsor Music in the Park. An impressive lineup of talented musicians has been arranged, and they are ready to perform for you. On Tuesday, June 13th at 7:00 pm, the gifted and versatile Camille Sanders will delight you. So, mark your calendars and plan to attend. There is no charge for Music in the Park. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy! We look forward to visiting with you where – as we like to say – you can always find Comfort in Texas.
