Geneva runs away from Hyde Park

After a first-round bye, the Geneva School of Boerne girls basketball team began postseason play Tuesday night at home by hosting district opponent Hyde Park.

After a first-round bye, the Geneva School of Boerne girls basketball team began postseason play Tuesday night at home by hosting district opponent Hyde Park.

Geneva swept the Austin school during league play and won their two games by an average of 25 points.

Hyde Park had a stronger showing on Tuesday against the Eagles, but Geneva still won by double digits. The Eagles took care of the Lady Panthers, 58-44 and improved to 27-2.

Geneva advances to the third round where they’ll face The Woodlands Christian Academy Saturday in Flatonia, 2 p.m.

Saturday’s matchup features two top 10 TAPPS teams in the state. Geneva is No. 1 in 5A and The Woodlands Christian is No. 8.

In Tuesday’s contest, one of the Geneva players, Micah Howard, reached a personal milestone and scored the 1,000th point of her high school career.

Howard tied teammate Alexa Elizondo for teamhigh honors after both seniors scored 15 points on Tuesday.

Freshman Maegan Riebel was also in double digits with 11 points, Chloe Donnell, another freshman, tallied 8, Brynn Riebel netted 4, Suzie Nilsson finished with 3 and Sydney Griffey hit for 2.

The Eagles attempted 28 3-pointers in the game and knocked down 6 of them.

Brynn Riebel made it a double-double with 10 rebounds, Griffey snagged 8 boards, while Elizondo and Brynn Riebel both collected 7 rebounds.

Howard also dished out 4 assists and came up with 4 steals, while Elizondo had 4 steals as well.
