Deer softball improves to 7-0

The Comfort softball team remains unbeaten this season and is 7-0 after they defeated Johnson City on Monday and then went 5-0 at the Junction Tournament last weekend.

Before that, the Deer won its home opener against Junction. Comfort is entered in the Three Rivers tourney this weekend.

Emma Wardlaw tossed a no-hitter Monday against Johnson City as Comfort won 15-0 behind 19 hits. It was almost a perfect game for Wardlaw who walked one while the defense committed one error to allow only two base runners.

Comfort knocked out 19 hits and picked up 13 RBI. Ashlynn Rodriguez tripled, Layla Castro and Katie Haffner both doubled and Morgan Hansen hit 2 doubles and a single and scored 3 runs.

Junction Tournament

At Junction, the Deer won its five games by a combined score of 60-4.

They started off with an 8-1 win over Ozona and scored 6 in the first inning. They had 8 hits in the game, including doubles from Layla Castro, Morgan Hansen and Emma Wardlaw, while Tilly Avalos scored 2 runs.

Wardlaw and Madalynn Rodriguez both pitched and struck out 6 combined and gave up 2 hits.

The Deer also beat Grape Creek, 14-1, and had another fast start with 12 runs in the first frame.

CHS has 12 hits including a homer by Ashlynn Rodriguez, triples from Tori Hernandez and Rodriguez and doubles from Morgan Hansen, Hope Van Geffen and Emma Wardlaw.

Wardlaw and Hansen both pitched and only gave up 2 hits combined and 1 run.

Up next, Comfort beat Medina, 8-0 in three frames behind a three-inning perfect game by Madalynn Rodriguez, who struck out 4 and didn’t give up a walk, hit or allow a runner, while striking out 4.

Comfort had 3 hits and scored 4 in the first, followed by 2 runs in the last 2 frames as 8 different runners scored once.

From there, Comfort exploded for 18 runs in an 18-2 win over Junction. It was 4-2 and then Comfort plated 14 runs in the top of the 4th frame after they sent 17 batters to the plate.

CHS had 10 hits in the game, including doubles from Layla Castro, Madalynn Rodriguez, Emma Wardlaw and Kryssa Zenon.

Emma Wardlaw was the winning pitcher and gave up 1 hit, no earned runs, fanned 8 and walked 1.

Comfort closed it out with its second shutout win, this time over Winters, 12-0. The Deer had 14 hits and scored 10 runs in the second.

Emma Wardlaw hit a homer and doubled, Tori Hernandez tripled, while Morgan Hansen and Hope Van Geffen doubled.

Tilly Avalos, Hansen, Hernandez, Katie Haffner and Kryssa Zenon all scored twice.

It was another three-inning perfect game for the Deer pitching staff. Wardlaw threw 2 innings, struck out 5 and picked up the win, while not giving up a walk, hit or run. Madalynn Rodriguez tossed 1 frame and retired the side in order and struck out 1.
