Boerne High opened its 2022 baseball season on the road this week at Cornerstone Christian in San Antonio.
Tuesday’s opener turned into a defensive struggle but the Greyhounds were able to record a 3-0 win to start the year at 1-0.
The Hounds are scheduled to play in the Somerset Tournament this weekend.
BHS took an early lead and scored in the top of the first after Cam Johnson walked and moved to third on a Rashawn Galloway single.
From there, Cole Phillips grounded out but drove in Johnson from third and that would be the only offense the Hounds would need to win since the Greyhounds pitching staff didn’t allow a run.
Three different BHS pitchers combined for the shutout. Phillips started on the mound and went 4 innings to get the win. He tossed 55 pitches and fanned 8 with no walks.
Kalob Sanchez threw 1.2 innings and struck out a batter and walked two, while Andrew Poole went 1.1 frames and didn’t give up a hit or walk.
Boerne picked up two insurance runs late in the game. They scored another run in the fourth after Phillips reached on an error. Tyler Garritano walked and Phillips’ courtesy runner, Connor Shill, moved to second. A sac bunt by Sanchez advanced everyone one base. Dylan Perez was hit by a pitch to load the bases and then Max Garcia walked to bring in Shill and it was 2-0.
In the fifth, Phillips again reached on an error as the Warriors struggled defensively and committed six errors.
Phillips’ courtesy runner, Shill, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Garritano put the ball in play and reached on an error, allowing Shill to score from third to make it 3-0 to close out the scoring.
BHS knocked out 3 singles and Galloway had 2 of the team’s 3 hits and Garritano had the other. Phillips and Garcia picked up RBIs, while Johnson scored once and Shill crossed home plate twice.
