Boerne baseball sweeps Texans to close out regular season

Wimberley played the Boerne High baseball team tough to close out the regular season last week, but the Greyhounds were able to record a couple of two-run wins against the Texans.

BHS defeated Wimberley last Tuesday at home, 3-1, and then visited the Texans on Friday to get the 5-3 victory. The Hounds close out the regular season with a record of 26-4. They went 13-2 in district and open the playoffs Friday against Cuero in a best-of-three series, all in Marion.

Game 1 is Friday, 7 p.m., Game 2 is Saturday at 2 p.m., and a third game will follow if needed.

Boerne 3, Wimberley 1

Boerne High defeated Wimberley last Tuesday at Greyhound Field, 3-1, and it marked the final regular-season game for BHS coach Bill Merrell at Greyhound Field, but Merrell, who is retiring after 44 years, the last 14 at Boerne, said he hasn’t focused on any of that.

“I haven’t really thought about it,” he said. “It’s not about Coach Merrell’s last hurrah, so don’t make it bigger than it is. It’s all about the seniors and getting as far as we can in the playoffs.”

The Greyhounds had already wrapped up the district title, but the coach said their goal is to get better every week as the playoffs approach.

“Hopefully we have a long way to go, but we just have to relax and get back to what got us here,” Merrell said. “We only had two hits tonight because we’re overswinging, we’re in love with that outfield fence, we just have to relax.”

Fortunately for the Hounds, one of Boerne’s two hits was a home run, while Wimberley only had two hits as well.

In the first, Brooks Perez walked to start the inning and then Riley Pechacek homered to left for the quick 2-0 lead.

In the third, Cam Johnson walked, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on another wild pitch to make it 3-0.

The shutout held until the sixth when Wimberley scratched for a run after starting off the inning with a double and the lead was down to 3-1, but the Texans didn’t account for any more runs.

Besides the Pechacek homer, Xander Cloudy singled to account for Boerne’s other hit, but the Hounds did take eight walks in the game, which limited their hit totals.

Brooks Perez, Hudson McNew and Cale Blalock all walked twice, while Johnson and Hutson Hendrix were given free passes to first base.

Cloudy picked up the complete- game victory and only threw 85 pitches in seven innings of work. He scattered 2 hits, gave up 1 run, no walks and struck out 5.

Boerne 5, Wimberley 3

The Greyhounds held a 3-0 lead by the top of the third but the Texans tied it with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to make it 3-3.

Boerne responded with the eventual game-winning run in the top of the fourth and then added an insurance run in the top of the fifth.

Cale Blalock doubled to start the fourth and moved over to third on a Walker Hill sacrifice. From there, Brooks Perez hit a sac fly to score Blalock and Boerne was up 4-3.

In the fifth, courtesy runner, Grant Tamplet, scored on an error to bump the lead to 5-3.

Boerne had 8 hits in the game, 4 of them doubles. Blalock hit 2 of them, while Riley Pechacek and Hutson Hendrix both doubled.

Blalock also singled and scored once, Pechacek hit a single to go with his double, picked up an RBI and scored a run, while Hendrix doubled, singled and pushed in a run. Brooks Perez singled, drove in a run, took 2 walks and scored twice, while Dylan Perez singled.

It was pitching by committee as the Hounds used four different hurlers in the game. Landon Lestourgeon went 3 innings, gave up 4 hits, 3 runs, walked 2 and fanned 5, Cager Van Stavern tossed an inning and walked 1 and struck out 1, Campbell Jackson went 2 innings on the bump and yielded a hit, no runs or walks and fanned 1, while Cam Johnson threw one frame and sat down 2 without giving up a hit, run or walk.
