Champion softball knocked from postseason contention

As the Champion softball team entered the final game of the regular season last Friday, the Lady Chargers were still fighting for a playoff spot and a victory at Seguin would have helped its chances.

Besides a win at Seguin, Champion needed Veterans Memorial to lose to Kerrville Tivy on Friday, but none of those things happened after Seguin defeated the Chargers, 8-0, and the Lady Patriots topped the Antlers, 11-3.

It all means that Champion will miss the postseason party this year, while Veterans Memorial takes the final playoff spot up for grabs in 26-5A at 7-7.

The Chargers end the season at 12-15 overall and 6-8 in district where they finished fifth.

In Friday’s contest, neither team scored in the first two frames, but the Matadors broke the ice in the third inning with 2 runs. They scored in four straight innings and added another in the fourth, 3 in the fifth and 2 in the sixth and then didn’t bat in the seventh.

Champion finished with 3 hits in the game, singles from Dakota Salazar, Emily Young and Ava Trevino but couldn’t push in a run.

Trevino pitched for the Chargers and gave up 7 hits, 3 earned runs, walked 6 and struck out 3.

Seniors this year for the Lady Chargers are Ava Trevino, Madison Hall, Kassidy Kureska, Finley Shanley and Emily Young.
