The Boerne High softball team wrapped up the regular season Tuesday at home with a convincing 14-2 win in five innings over Wimberley and in the process clinched this year’s 27-4A title.
This is the program’s second consecutive district championship and marks the first time in school history that the Lady Hounds have been able to win back-to-back league crowns in softball. The 2007 state championship BHS team didn’t win district that year.
One of the players, Ava “Bevo” Rodriguez said she was glad to be part of BHS history.
“It so exciting,” she said. “Just knowing I got to help out and move this team forward.”
Boerne will have a little bit of a break and won’t play again until the end of this week, which will help them heal up a little physically.
BHS coach Chester Pettibon said the team is excited about the postseason.
“I like where we’re at mentally,” he said, “and physically we’re getting where we need to be.”
In Tuesday’s game, Boerne was actually trailing 2-0 going into the bottom of the second after the Lady Texans hit two solo homers, but BHS took the lead in the bottom half of the inning at 6-2 thanks to 5 singles and a walk.
It stayed that way until the bottom of the fourth when Boerne blew it open with 8 runs for the 14-2 lead. Taryn Madlock tripled and Taylor Wilson doubled in the inning. Both players batted twice in the frame and reached base both times.
Besides the triple and double, the Lady Hounds also used 4 singles, 2 hit batters and an error and ended up sending 12 to the plate in the inning.
BHS finished with 12 hits were led by Madlock who tripled, doubled and singled, drove in 4 runs and scored 3 times. Wilson doubled and hit 2 singles, scored 2 runs and brought in 2 runs. Rodriguez singled and drove in 2 runs, Ava Renteria hit 2 singles and scored twice, Isa Renteria singled, picked up 2 RBI and scored 2 runs, Heidi Maytum singled, Ryleigh Hastings singled and scored and Bre Krause scored a run.
Rodriguez tossed 74 pitches to earn the win from the circle and gave up 4 hits, 2 runs, didn’t walk a batter and struck out 11.
Boerne ends the regular season at 24-9 overall and 9-1 in district.
While the team is excited about the postseason, Coach Pettibon said they have a tough road ahead.
“This year is the toughest as far as the road we’re going to have to follow just because of how they realigned everything,” he said. “In the second, third and fourth rounds we’re playing high-ranked teams. There are no weak teams on the schedule, it’s going to be a survive and move on type of thing.”
