The Champion baseball team is still battling for a playoff spot and picked up a win Tuesday at Smithson Valley that will help its postseason chances.
The Chargers defeated the Rangers, 7-5, and improved to 20-8-1 overall and 7-4 in district. They were tied for third place heading into Friday’s home game against Smithson Valley. They close out the regular season this week vs. Seguin and host the Matadors Tuesday and are on the road Friday.
In Tuesday’s game, Champion scored in the first two innings. In the first, Cam Logan walked and later scored on a Jordan Ballin ground out, and in the second, Grant Kinzel hit a 2-run home run and the Chargers took a 3-0 lead.
The Rangers tied it up with 3 runs in the bottom of the second with 2 singles, a walk and an error but the Chargers used another long ball to pull ahead for good starting in the third.
Ballin walked, and later in the inning, Evan Kuhl homered on the first pitch he saw to make it 5-3. Logan also brought in two runs with a hit to bring in Kinzel and Andrew Frei and the lead bumped to 7-3.
Smithson Valley tried to rally but only managed single runs in the bottom of the third and fifth frames. The run in the fifth came via a homer but it was only a 1-run shot.
Both teams finished with 6 hits apiece, while Kuhl and Kinzel both knocked one out of the park and picking up 2 RBI each in the game.
Ethan Harrison singled, Ballin walked twice, scored and drove in a run, Rowdy Miller singled, while Logan knocked out 2 singles, scored a run and collected 2 RBI.
Miller went three innings and picked up the win after he tossed 67 pitches. He gave up 5 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 walks and struck out 4.
Jacob Schwope went the last 4 innings and recorded the save. He yielded 1 hit, 1 run, fanned 9 and gave up 4 walks.
