City collects large amount of brush after winter storm

Following the significant winter storm that impacted the City of Boerne in late January and early February, the City of Boerne Streets Department quickly pivoted from keeping roads ice-free during the storm to brush and tree collection afterwards.

In February and March, the department responded to 425 residential addresses for brush collection – nearly a third of which occurred in the span of four days between Feb. 21 – 24 when they collected 138 brush piles.

“I am very proud of the hard work our Streets Department has done over the last two months,” City Manager Ben Thatcher said. “While some Hill Country communities ended up spending between $300,000 to $500,000 for emergency clean up after the winter storm, we were able to absorb the cost by utilizing City staff and save taxpayers money.”

In total, they collected 3,976 cubic yards of brush and downed tree limbs. That amount is more than enough to fill an Olympic swimming pool – which fills 3,600 cubic yards of space – and required 142 trips to the Kendall County brush collection site. This number does not include the monthly bulky item/brush collection done by WM as part of the City’s contract with them.

For some perspective, in 2022 the City of Boerne conducted a total of 183 residential collections.

“To be able to complete more than two years’ worth of brush collection in two months truly highlights the dedication of the Streets Department,” Engineering and Mobility Director Jeff Carroll said. “They rose to the challenge and handled their normal duties on top of this added task and meet the needs of our community.”

The City reminds residents of the monthly bulky item/brush collection by WM, with size limits not to exceed 12 cubic yards, and the City-sponsored brush collection.
