BHS girls smack Sweeny, face Navarro on Tuesday

It didn’t take the Boerne High girls long to turn Friday’s second-round playoff game against Sweeny into a blowout.

It didn’t take the Boerne High girls long to turn Friday’s second-round playoff game against Sweeny into a blowout.

The Lady Bulldogs entered the contest in Hallettsville as a district champ and only had three losses all season but Friday’s second-round tilt was basically over by halftime when the Lady Greyhounds were ahead by almost 40 points.

Boerne (32-4) went on to smash Sweeny, 74-28, and advanced to the third round where they’ll face Navarro Tuesday at Taylor Field House, 6:30 p.m. Navarro has defeated Wimberley and Beeville Jones in its first two playoff games.

Last Friday’s game turned heated at times, at least on the Sweeny side, and the Lady Bulldogs picked up four technical fouls and had one player ejected.

The referees called the game tight and there were a lot of whistles and fouls called. The end result was 36 free throws for the Lady Hounds and 19 for Sweeny for 55 combined free-throw attempts.

Boerne was good at the line and went 25 for 36 and Sweeney was 9 for 19.

BHS never trailed in the game and was up 25-8 after one quarter. Averi Aaron scored 10 points in the first and had outscored the entire Sweeny team at that point as did Jordyn Lemm who had 9 points at the end of the first.

Sweeny struggled in the second and its only point in the entire period was a free throw, while the Lady Hounds poured it on and tallied 23 points to take a 48-9 advantage into halftime.

Boerne won the third quarter, 12-7, and was up 60-16 going into the fourth.

It was a strange final stanza and at one point there were four fouls called in just two seconds. Boerne shot 16 free throws and Sweeny went to the line 8 times for 24 foul shots combined in the final stanza.

The only question was would Boerne lead by 50 points, and the answer was yes. After Savannah Salinas hit a 3-pointer, Boerne was up 68-20. Sweeny picked up consecutive technical fouls and Salinas made all four free throws and the lead swelled to 72-20 for a 52-point advantage.

The marathon fourth quarter finally ended, and Boerne won by 46 points.

Aaron finished with 20 points, Salinas recorded 14, Lemm added 11, Liz Fox tallied 9, Abby Smith netted 7, Jenna Ruede had 6, Jamie Ruede scored 5 and Karson Kurtz chipped in with 2.

Lemm came up with 6 steals and 5 assists, Aaron collected 9 rebounds and Jamie Ruede had 4 assists.
