After a week off, the Comfort softball team returned to the diamond on Monday and came up with a huge win against Blanco.
In their first-round meeting, the Panthers defeated the Comfort Deer, 10-9, but on Monday in Comfort the Deer left little doubt and knocked out 16 hits to record the 10-4 victory.
CHS improves to 15-11 overall and has won four straight. In fact, the last time they lost was to Blanco in the first round. They are 7-1 in district and still need to play their game with Florence that was rained out last Thursday. That game will be made up Monday, April 17 at 5 p.m.
Comfort took control right away during Monday’s game, which was also Senior Night. The Deer scored 3 in the first and another in the second for the 4-0 lead. Comfort finished out the game with 3 in the fourth and 3 more in the fifth.
Of their 16 hits, 12 were singles. Layla Castro hit 2 doubles and a single, scored twice and drove in 2 runs, Morgan Hansen doubled and singled, drove in 2 runs and scored once and Kendyl Rust doubled and singled, picked up 2 RBI and scored a run.
Hope Van Geffen hit 2 singles and pushed in 3 runs, Emma Wardlaw knocked out 3 singles, Kaydence Stehling singled, Katie Haffner walked, scored and pushed in a run, Tori Hernandez knocked out 3 singles and scored 3 runs and Kippy Sterling walked and scored a run.
Wardlaw was the winning pitcher and gave up 5 hits and no earned runs or walks and struck out 9.
