The Champion softball team was entered in its first tournament of the year last weekend when they played in Kerrville.

Champion was coming off a district-opening win thanks to a 3-run homer in the sixth inning against NB Canyon.

At the tourney, the Lady Chargers played 6 games and faced three teams twice. They won two games, lost three and tied another for a 2-3-1 mark and stand at 3-3-1 overall.

Champion is off Tuesday and plays in the NEISD tournament this coming weekend.

The Chargers played two games a day at the tourney and didn’t drop a contest on the opening day.

They started off with an 11-3 win over Devine in the morning and then tied San Angelo Central later in the day.

Two Champion pitchers, Lily Ritchie and Carmen Vela, combined for a 7-0 shutout win over the Arabians. The duo struck out 9, with 8 Ks for Vela, who didn’t give up a hit, while Ritchie yielded 2 hits and fanned 1.

Ashley Ottmers and Gabi Vela both hit doubles and scored 2 runs, Vela also picked up 2 RBI.

Champion played Central to a 2-2 tie, but outhit the San Angelo school, 8-3. The Chargers were trailing 2-0 but tied it in the sixth with 2 runs.

Ava Trevino and Madison Hall both drove in runs, Hall, Krista Tarver and Gabi Vela all had 2 hits, while Vela and Kassidy Kureska both scored.

Carmen Vela fanned 11 and gave up 3 hits and 2 runs.

Champion faced Blanco twice at the tourney and lost both. In the first meeting, the Panthers won 7-4. The Chargers scored first and went up 4-0 but gave up 7 runs in the fifth and couldn’t recover.

Ava Trevino, Jaycee Bendele and Lily Ritchie all pitched for the Chargers.

Gabi Vela hit a home run and drove in 2 runs, while Krista Tarver and Ashley Ottmers both recorded 2 hits in the game.

The Chargers had another game against Central and this time lost to the San Angelo school, 6-3, despite getting more hits, 8-7.

Central had a fast start and was up 4-0 in the first thanks to a two-out grand slam and added another run in the second for the 5-0 lead.

Carmen Vela went the distance in the circle and threw 88 pitches.

Champion scored all its runs in the 4th inning and picked up an RBI from Ashley Ottmers and 2 RBI from Marlena Spurrier. Spurrier, Riley Murrish and Lily Ritchie all scored in the game, while Carmen Vela hit a double.

In the rematch with Blanco on Saturday, the Panthers won another close one over the Chargers, 4-2.

Another early home run hurt Champion after Blanco hit a 2-run shot in the first and added another run in the inning and was up 3-0 before the Chargers even batted.

Champion scored a run in the first and another in the third and finished with 6 hits in the game.

Carmen Vela doubled and singled and scored both runs, Ashley Ottmers and Krista Tarver both picked up RBIs and Gabi Vela recorded 2 hits.

Ava Trevino and Finley Shanley both tossed 3 innings in the game and Shanley had 5 Ks.

The Chargers closed out the tourney with a 7-0 win over Devine to beat them twice in three days.

Champion used 3 runs in the first and 4 in the second to account for all its runs. They finished with 9 hits in the game.

Ashley Ottmers and Gabi Vela both hit doubles, Ottmers added 2 more singles and scored twice, Vela picked up 2 RBI, scored twice and added a single, while Finley Shanley hit 2 singles and pushed in 3 runs.

Lily Ritchie and Carmen Vela both tossed and combined for the shutout, while Vela fanned 8 and picked up the win.
