Fredericksburg put up a pretty good fight during Monday’s district baseball game with Boerne and even though the Billies kept it close, the Greyhounds went on to record the 6-2 victory at home.
Boerne improves to 21-2 overall and 8-0 in district. They closed out their series with Fredericksburg Thursday at Fred. They’ll start a series with Canyon Lake Tuesday on the road and at home on Friday.
Boerne scored a run in the first and 2 more in the second for the 3-0 lead thanks to two RBIs from Cam Johnson, but the Battlin’ Billies scratched for 2 runs in the top of the fifth with a 2-run home run.
BHS was only leading 3-2 until the sixth inning when the Greyhounds added 3 insurance runs for some breathing room.
Johnson started things off in the sixth with a solo home run to bump the lead to 4-2. After the next batter flew out to left, BHS loaded the bases with a double from Hutson Hendrix and a couple of walks.
Fred changed pitchers at that point but it didn’t slow down the Hounds after Cale Blalock singled to score courtesy runner Jaxon Baize from third for the 5-2 advantage.
With the bases still juiced, Walker Hill grounded out to second but scored Jace Preston from third and Boerne was up 6-2 before the Billies could get out of the inning.
Fredericksburg had one last chance in the top of the seventh but they were retired in order with a ground out, fly out and a strike out from pitcher Xander Cloudy, who only needed 83 pitches to get the win.
Cloudy gave up 3 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk and sat down 5.
The Hounds only managed 5 hits in the game, 3 for extra bases.
Johnson homered and singled, drove in 3 runs and scored once, Riley Pechacek doubled and picked up an RBI, Hendrix doubled and walked, Preston scored a run, Brooks Perez walked twice and scored twice, while Baize and Hill scored one run each.
