The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970, to promote environmental awareness and protection. The event attracted over 20 million Americans to participate in environmental rallies and protests, leading to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of important environmental legislation such as the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act. Since then, Earth Day has been celebrated globally and has become a platform for raising awareness on environmental issues and advocating for sustainability.
In 1988, a small but mighty ‘Circle of Friends’ in our Boerne, Texas community officially established the Cibolo Wilderness Trail. They cleaned up trash, advocated for and worked with local leaders to create a city trail system, and devoted their own time, money, and skills to start what is now the Cibolo Center for Conservation. Today the Cibolo continues to devote itself to preserving, sharing, and teaching about living harmoniously and sustainably with our wide-open spaces. With over 160-acres across two campuses, Cibolo Nature Center and historic Herff Farm, the Cibolo offers miles of trails, four distinct ecosystems and protects the fragile Cibolo Creek watershed. We also serve more than 113,000 visitors annually and thousands more through nature-based education programs and community events. We want to continue expanding our growth as far as we can, and with a community like ours, who has come through time and time again, we know we can accomplish so much.
To commemorate our 35th birthday, we are raising $35,000 towards ambitious goals we have set across our organization. We hope to enhance educational standards for Camp programs and the Nest Nature School to expand knowledge, connection and action with nature, create real world policies, plans, and technologies that support sustainability and resilience for the Texas Hill Country and beyond, and help with providing nature access for all, scholarship support for programs, and creating new programs for seniors and wellness. We will be celebrating our 35th Earth Day Birthday on April 22nd 9:00am to 1:00pm at the Herff Farm with our Farmers Market, the Native Plant Sale by the Boerne Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas, music, food, guided tours, and crafts and games organized by different departments of our organization. We invite all our friends near and far, new and old to join in on the festivities. None of this would be possible without you.
