City officials preparting for two solar eclipses

This Saturday marks one year before Boerne will find itself in the path of a rare total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, when the moon will completely block out the sun.

Total Solar Eclipse – April 8, 2024

This Saturday marks one year before Boerne will find itself in the path of a rare total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, when the moon will completely block out the sun.

During this event, the population of Boerne and Kendall County is expected to double as tens of thousands of people flock to the Hill Country to witness the phenomenon. Boerne and much of the area (exlcuding San Antonio) will be in the path of totality, meaning four minutes of total darkness in the middle of the afternoon from 1:32 – 1:36 p.m.

With this influx of visitors, the City and its local and state partners have been planning for the event for well over a year. Meetings have been held to coordinate on traffic management, the staging of emergency personnel, communications, and other public safety services.

Annular Eclipse – October 17, 2023

Before the big event in April 2024, there will be another eclipse on October 14, 2023. This will be an annular eclipse, when the moon lines up with the sun creating a “ring of fire” around the moon. Boerne is also in the direct path of this eclipse, known as anularity.

The annualar eclipse is expected to draw visitors to Boerne and the Hill Country in good numbers, but not nearly as what is expected for the total eclipse in 2024.

The City has created a webpage dedicated to the two solar eclipses events in Boerne. The page includes an overview of the two eclipses, safety informaiton, and other planning tips. You can also download a full Eclipse Informaiton Guide produced by the City of Boerne and Kendall County.
