Boerne Champion split its last two softball games and lost a tough one to Seguin, 8-7, and then bounced back to whip Wagner, 10-0.

Also last week, the Lady Chargers closed out the first round of district and began the second round with Friday’s contest vs. Wagner.

Champion is 4-4 in district and 10-11 overall. They were at Veterans Memorial on Tuesday and host NB Canyon on Thursday of this week.

Vs. Wagner

Champion took control of Friday’s contest in Boerne with a 5-run first inning. They added single runs in the third and fourth and then plated 3 runs in the fifth to get its 10 runs and kick in the mercy rule.

Wagner was held to 1 hit and no runs as the Chargers swept the Thunderbirds this season.

Ava Trevino picked up the win on 65 pitches and only walked 1 batter while striking out 9.

The Chargers hit the ball well and knocked out 10 hits, 5 of them doubles.

Madison Hall and Marlena Spurrier both recorded 2 doubles each and Emily Young also legged out a double.

Young added a single and a walk to her double, scored twice and drove in a run, Hall also hit a single with her double, picked up a run and scored once, while Spurrier also singled, collected 2 RBI and plated a run.

Dakota Salazar singled and scored twice, Lilly Ritchie singled and scored, Finley Rice scored a run, while Riley Murrish had 2 hits, drove in 2 runs and scored 2 runs.

Vs. Seguin

Champion tried to rally against Seguin last Wednesday but the rally came up short. The Matadors were up 6-0 at one point before winning 8-7.

Champion scored 7 of the last 9 runs in the game but couldn’t catch Seguin.

The Matadors scored 6 in the third and 2 in the fourth to pull ahead 6-0. The Chargers answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead in half at 6-3, but the Matadors fired back with 2 in the fifth to make it 8-3.

Champion had another 3-run inning in the fifth thanks to a 3-run bomb by Kassidy Kureska to trim the lead to 8-6 and then scored another run in the sixth and the score was 8-7.

In the bottom of the seventh, Champion put two runners on with one out, but Seguin got out of the jam with a couple of strikeouts to end the game.

The Chargers outhit the Matadors, 7-5, but had more errors, 6-3. Only 4 of Seguin’s 8 runs were earned.

Ava Trevino went the distance in the circle and tossed 127 pitches. She gave up 5 hits, 4 earned runs, 6 walks and fanned 3.

Kureska had a big day at the plate and hit the homer to go with a double, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3 runs.

Dakota Salazar hit 2 singles and scored, Trevino singled and walked, Lilly Ritchie singled, scored and drove in a run, Marlena Spurrier singled and scored, while Abby Brehmer and Riley Murrish plated single runs each.
