Runs were hard to come by on Wednesday when the Fredericksburg softball team visited Boerne for a district contest against the Lady Greyhounds.
Only one run was scored in the game and it came from the Boerne team that went on to record the 1-0 win.
The old saying is that “a win is a win” and Boerne will take it. The Lady Hounds improve to 19-8 overall and stay unbeaten at 4-0 in district. They were at Wimberley on Friday to close out the first round.
BHS pushed in its only run of the game in the third frame. Riley Partin doubled to start the inning and moved to third on an Ava Nieto sacrifice. After that, Taryn Madlock grounded out to first to bring in Partin for the 1-0 lead.
Boerne came close to scoring a few other times but were turned away by the Fredericksburg defense and pitcher Ava Stuewe.
Ava Renteria tripled in the second with one out but was stranded at third and then the Lady Hounds had a runner thrown out at home in the first.
Fred made things interesting in the sixth inning when they loaded the bases with one out, but the Boerne defense bent and didn’t break.
Ava Rodriguez got the next Billies batter to hit to third where Bre Krause fielded the ball and threw to catcher Heidi Maytum at home for the second out. Rodriguez then ended the threat with a strikeout.
BHS had 5 hits after Taylor Wilson, a recent Texas State commit, finished with 2 singles, Renteria tripled and singled and Partin singled and scored the lone run.
Rodriguez threw 102 pitches for Boerne to get the win. She gave up 4 hits, no runs or walks and struck out 10.
