The Champion girls soccer team didn’t win many of the statistical battles during Friday’s first-round playoff match against Leander Rouse, but they won the one that matters most – the scoreboard.
Even though Rouse was the higher seed (1 vs. 4), playing at home, took more shots (14 vs. 8) and had more shots on goal (10 vs. 6), it was Lady Chargers that came away with a 2-0 victory.
Champion improves to 10-11-1 overall and played Medina Valley on Tuesday in the sec- ond round at Gustafson Stadium.
In last Friday’s match, the Lady Chargers got on the board in the 13th minute when Neveah Garris knocked in a goal on the Ava Godoy assist for the 1-0 lead.
Later in the first half, Godoy tallied an unassisted goal to put Champion head 2-0 in the 33rd minute.
The second half turned into a defensive battle as neither team scored. Lola Vaughan was in goal for the Chargers and she and the rest of the defense preserved the shutout. Vaughan came up with 10 saves in the match.
