This fiscal year, the library has issued nearly 1,000 new library cards!
It’s always fun to welcome new folks to the library – we love to hear their impressions of our physical space, our study rooms, our collection and our youth department. But what I also try to emphasize with new library members is the wealth of information our library card opens up for them both online and through programming that might be a little outside of what they might think a library does.
We work hard to make sure your experience with our holdings doesn’t end at the checkout process. Here are just a few ideas we can help with beyond access to books. Hope you find something useful for you!
Struggling with your child’s math homework? Log into tutor.comfor realtime online homework help noon to midnight, or drop off a math question. Tutor.com also offers paper reviews, AP Prep, along with resources for taking the ACT, SAT or ASVAB, among others.
Love local history? We offer a quarterly emailed newsletter chockful of it, along with a continually growing local database of digitized historical items at Biblioboard.com – just head to our catalog page and click on the link in the gray box.
Learning a new language? Mango offers language learning at the tip of your desktop fingertips or on the go with our mobile app.
Looking for a new job? Our career resources library guide (we call these “libguides”) is one click away on our website – just head to online library to see how we can help. We also offer study rooms for online job interviews (and a laptop you can borrow if you don’t have one), quiet space to work on applications and public computers for job searches. We also have a libguide for small business startups if you are thinking about hanging a shingle this year. We also provide proctoring services for certifications that can help you advance in your career.
Interested in reading more? If time is an obstacle here and you have a commute, consider audiobooks. We have two e- and audio-book online systems providing access to more than 100,000 audio books you can download and listen in your car. Check out Libby and Cloud Library wherever you get your apps.
Needing to finally tackle those boxes of old family videos and photographs to make space? Let us teach you how to use the library’s Digital Media Lab and how to organize the project so that it works for you.
Putting yourself on a media diet? We can’t promise Netflix or HBO Max, but we do now offer streaming video services through Biblio+ (a service of Cloud Library) and Infobase. It might help as you trim dollars from your online subscriptions.
Committing to a volunteer schedule? The library has a lot of possibility, come see us and talk to us about your interests. If the library isn’t your thing, head to kendallcountygiving. com and check out the wide breadth of organizations in our community seeking help.
Wanting to improve your physical and mental wellbeing? We offer Qi Gong, Yoga and Sound Meditation monthly. In April, we partner with Boerne Parks and Recreation for Get Fit Boerne, which enables you to try out dozens of classes and programs for free to see what works for you. Head to the Boerne Parks and Recreation website soon for a list of all programs scheduled. For an online only version, check out our database Udemy, which offers a multitude of mental, creative and physical courses to feed your soul.
Craving a creative outlet? We offer writing workshops for writers of all skills, art programs, including drawing and water color, jewelry making and a monthly makerspace. Bring your own project in for Killer Crafts and work on it while listening to and discussingtrue crime podcasts. We are also launching a Library of Things collection to provide you with items to try before you buy (or to save the cabinet space and just use the items here). In the next few weeks, we’ll begin circulating cameras, birding equipment, additional cake pans, cake decorating kits, cookie cutters, looms, board games, science kits, microscopes, coding kits, building tiles and more. Give me or Caren a call if you are interested in more information.
There is a lot I haven’t delved into – a plethora of programming, our popular monthly music concerts (always third Thursday, 7 p.m.), our annual book festival and our history events to name just a few. If we aren’t offering something you’d like to see, let us know! See you soon at the library!
