SAN ANTONIO – The Boerne High boys basketball team went toe-to-toe with Houston Washington for the entire four quarters of last Friday’s 4A state semifinals game in the Alamodome, but in the end, the Eagles just had too much firepower for the Greyhounds.

The Eagles won last Friday’s state semifinals game in the Alamodome, 75-69, and ended Boerne’s year at 32-6.

It’s the third straight year for the Greyhounds to play in the 4A state semifinals, a first in Boerne ISD history for a basketball team.

“I don’t really have words for that, it’s been incredible,” BHS Coach Kimble McHone said about the program’s performance the last three years. “You have to meet expectations, you can’t lower them and for them to always be the favorites and live up to those expectations, I’m just so proud of them for what they’ve done.”

The Greyhounds were down 10 points late in the first quarter at 19-9 but had a strong second period and outscored the Eagles, 16-12, and took a one-point lead into halftime at 32-31.

At one point in the second, Boerne was trailing 19-26 but went on a 10-2 run and held its first lead of the game at 29-28 with 56 ticks before halftime.

Washington’s Odis Carter answered with a 3-pointer and the Eagles were back on top at 31-29 but Barrett Pape nailed a 3 with five seconds before the half and the Hounds took a 32-31 lead into halftime.

BHS closed out the second on an 11-5 spurt and hit three 3s during that run with two from Trevor Agarwal and another from Pape, who also added a 2-pointer.

“They got a lead, and we did a great job of taking the lead into halftime,” McHone said.

Washington came out of the break and retook the lead with its outside shooting. The Eagles hit their first three 3s and finished the quarter 6 for 10 from beyond the arch.

Washington completed several ally-oops in the first half and McHone said they wanted to take that away, but that gave the Eagles some looks from the outside.

“We knew they could shoot; they’re loaded, they’ve got guys on the inside and outside, so you have to pick your poison with them,” the coach said. “We wanted them to try and make shots from the outside and they did.”

Despite Washington’s hot shooting, Boerne held a 41-40 lead on a Koen Wolff bucket with 5:18 left in the third quarter but the Eagles got going and that would be the Hounds’ final lead of the season. Washington finished the period by outscoring the Hounds, 24-15, and took a 55-47 edge into the fourth quarter.

The Eagles outscored Boerne to start the final stanza 9-2 and opened up its biggest lead of the game at 15 points, 64-49, but the Hounds made a late push.

Over the next 3:20, BHS trimmed the lead to five at 69-64 after a 15-5 run but there was only 1:57 left in the game and that’s as close at the Hounds would get to catching the Eagles.

Washington scored 5 of its last 7 points at the line after Boerne had to start fouling and the Eagles were able to maintain the lead until the final buzzer.

“It was a great game, it went back and forth, and I think both teams showed why they’re here, we went at each other for a very long time. They got a lead, and we did a great job of taking the lead into halftime,” McHone said. “They did a great job of bumping it up, but we were getting it close at the end, if a couple more shots go in and we have fewer turnovers we come all the way back. “It was a heck of a team, two really good teams going at each other and just proud of our team and the effort they had today,” McHone added.

Boerne had five in double figures after Pape led the team with 19, Hendrix and Wolff added 14 each, Agarwal netted 12 and Colton Hoegemeyer tallied 10. Wolff, Agarwal and Pape played all 32 minutes.

Seniors are Trevor Agarwal, Koen Wolff, Colton Hoegemeyer, Barrett Pape, Houston Hendrix, Sam Waters and Jeffrey Brown.
