Champion softball edges Wagner in eight innings to begin district

The Boerne Champion softball team opened district action on Tuesday with a road trip to Wagner and won a close contest over the Thunderbirds in extra innings.

The Boerne Champion softball team opened district action on Tuesday with a road trip to Wagner and won a close contest over the Thunderbirds in extra innings.

Champion edged Wagner in eight frames, 4-3, to start district play at 1-0. The Lady Chargers are 7-7 overall and hosted Veterans Memorial on Friday.

Both teams plated 2 runs in the fourth frame during Tuesday’s game but the Lady Chargers took the lead with a single run in the sixth for the 3-2 advantage, however the Lady Thunderbirds tied it in the bottom of the seventh at 3-3 to send it to an extra inning.

The Champion bats came up clutch in the eighth with a single run in the top of the frame and the 4-3 lead and then the Chargers defense kept Wagner off the board in the bottom of the inning to seal the victory.

Champion outhit Wagner, 9-3, but the Thunderbirds kept it close.

Abby Brehmer singled and scored, Emily Young knocked out 2 singles, Kassidy Kureska doubled and scored twice, Ava Trevino hit 2 singles, picked up an RBI and scored a run, Lilly Ritchie recorded 2 singles and 2 RBI and Marlena Spurrier singled, walked and collected an RBI.

Ava Trevino went all 8 innings in the circle and scattered 3 hits, gave up 1 earned run, walked 8 and fanned 9 on 118 pitches.
