Champion boys in hunt for district title

Boerne Champion remained in the hunt for the District 26-5A title in boys soccer with another close win on Tuesday.

Boerne Champion remained in the hunt for the District 26-5A title in boys soccer with another close win on Tuesday.

After a 3-2 victory over Kerrville Tivy last Friday, the Chargers were on the road Tuesday and picked up another one-goal win at Pieper, 2-1.

With two matches left heading into Friday night, it’s getting down to crunch time for Champion.

The Chargers are 9-1-2 in district, while Smithson Valley is 10-2. District wins are worth 3 points and a tie is valued at 1, so the Chargers have 29 points and the Rangers have 30 points so there’s only one point difference between the two heading into Friday’s match up in Boerne that is basically for the district title.

Champion (12-1-3 overall) fell to Smithson Valley (15-71) in the first round of district play at Ranger Field, 1-0, so it might be another close match for the Chargers.

In Tuesday’s match, Champion was leading 1-0 at halftime and then both teams tallied single goals in the second half to give the Chargers the 2-1 win.

Crew Pulliam and Brogan Dempsey scored single goals and Alfredo Castellanos is turning into an assist machine after he recorded 2 assists and has assisted on the team’s last 5 goals.

Tanner Perkins was in goal for the Chargers.
