SEGUIN – Boerne broke the hearts of Cuero on Valentine’s Day after the Lady Greyhounds defeated the Lady Gobblers in the opening round of the 4A girls basketball playoffs Monday.

BHS struggled a bit from the outside but still won the contest by 19 points on Monday, 50-31. The Lady Hounds (30-4 overall) face Sweeny Friday in the second round in Hallettsville at 6:30 p.m. after Sweeny had to rally to beat Corpus Christi Miller, also on Monday.

Boerne went the entire first half on Tuesday without a 3-pointer and it wasn’t until late in the third quarter that Jenna Ruede nailed a 3. Ruede also hit another 3 early in the fourth quarter for the team’s only long-range shots.

Jenna’s sister, Jamie Ruede, said the team doesn’t necessarily need to hit the outshot shot to win games as evi-denced by Monday’s victory.

“We can win without making a lot of 3s if we’re aggressive,” she said. “We have to feed Averi (Aaron) and play good defense on the other end.”

That’s what the Boerne girls did, feed post player Averi Aaron. The sophomore outscored the entire Cuero team in the opening quarter after she tallied 11 of the team’s 17 points, while the Gobblers only had 8 points at the end of the period with Boerne ahead, 17-8.

Jamie Ruede then helped the Hounds in the second by scoring the team’s first 6 points as Boerne took a 25-12 lead into halftime.

Abby Smith added 2 points in the second and those were Boerne’s only points of the period after they scored just 8 in the stanza.

Jamie Ruede said they were a little out of sync because they hadn’t played in almost a week.

“We started off flat, we just didn’t knock shots down, and I think it was from not playing for a week,” she said.

Cuero struggled in the first half and only scored 8 in the first period and 4 in the second. The Lady Gobblers had a 7:30 scoring drought that spanned the first and second quarters.

BHS coach Amy Ruede said the Gobblers’ shots were off but added that their defense had something to do with it as well.

Boerne scored the first 9 points of the third after Aaron tallied 4, Jenna Ruede hit a 3 and Jamie Ruede had a basket and the lead ballooned to 22 points at 34-12 and the game was never in doubt after that.

The Lady Hounds ended the third quarter ahead 37-18 and then both teams tallied 13 points in the final stanza as Coach Ruede let everybody play to close it out.

The coach said it was a good opening-round win despite the fact that they went 2 for 15 from the 3-point line. Cuero was 0 for 5 from long range.

“I was pleased overall for our first playoff game. I had two freshman that started their first playoff game and they were tight,” she said. “We did a better job of running transition than we have in the past couple of games. We ran our offense, our shots from the outside didn’t fall but we took care of the ball.”

Aaron closed out the game with 22 points, Jenna Ruede and Jamie Ruede both scored 10, Jordyn Lemm netted 6 and Abby Smith hit a 2-pointer.

Aaron grabbed 13 rebounds and had 4 steals, while Jamie Ruede finished with 9 assists.
