The Boerne Champion boys baseball team went undefeated last weekend at the Comal ISD Tournament, although they did have a tie.
Champion finished the tourney at 4-0-1 and stands at 7-2-1 overall. The Chargers are off until this weekend when they play in the Leander Tournament.
Champion opened tournament play with a close win over Laredo Alexander, 4-3. The Chargers were down 3-1 but rallied for 3 runs in its last at bat for the win.
In that sixth inning, Gage Goldberg tripled to bring in two runs and tie it and then Cam Logan knocked in the game-winning run with a single to score Goldberg.
Goldberg also hit a double and a single, while Wyatt Chandler doubled and Evan Kuhl singled and drove in a run, while Jared Wingo and Jordan Ballin scored.
Five different players pitched in the game with Jackson Melanson getting the win. Matthew Booth went the longest at four innings, while Nate Mayo, Aidan Smith and Robbie Vela all threw in the game.
On Friday, the Chargers tied Judson, 6-6, after the time limit expired in tournament play. The Chargers scored 3 in the fifth to tie it up.
Champion had 7 hits, including 3 singles from Evan Kuhl, while Garland Whitehead hit 2 singles and drove in 2 runs and Kuhl scored once Jordan Ballin singled and picked up 2 RBI, Gage Goldberg singled and drove in a run, Wyatt Chandler and Andrew Frei both scored twice, and Jared Wingo plated a run.
Andrew Paulson, Nate Mayo and Ethan Harrison all tossed in the game and each struck out 2 batters.
Later on Friday, Champion blew out Brandeis, 12-0, behind 14 hits. They scored 5 in the second and third innings and added 2 more in the 4th.
Rowdy Miller was the winning pitcher and also tripled in the game. Miller scattered 2 hits, gave up 2 walks and fanned 5, while he also hit a single to go with his triple, drove in 2 runs and scored once.
Jordan Ballin doubled and singled, took 2 walks and scored once, while Cam Logan doubled and hit 2 singles, scored twice and drove in a run.
Evan Kuhl hit 2 singles, scored 3 runs and picked up an RBI, Gage Goldberg singled, scored and drove in 2 runs, Wyatt Chandler hit 2 singles and collected 2 RBI, Ethan Harrison singled and scored twice, Nic Cortez singled and scored, and Robbie Vela plated a run.
The Chargers closed out the tourney with two wins over Harlingen on Saturday. They beat the Cards 9-5 and 13-0.
In the 9-5 win, Champion recorded 11 hits, including doubles by Drennon Cunningham, Quinn Grable and Evan Kuhl, while Jordan Ballin hit 2 singles and scored twice.
Aidan Smith and Sam Miller both threw in the game with Smith getting the win. He went 3 innings and gave up 2 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk and fanned 6. Miller tossed 2 frames and yielded 3 hits, 1 earned run and a walk to go with 2 strikeouts.
In the 13-0 victory, the Chargers knocked out 9 hits and scored 12 in the first and did most of its damage with 2 outs.
With two on via walks and two outs in that first inning, the Chargers sent 13 batters to the plate and scored 12 runs before Harlingen could record the last out, which means Champion batted 17 players in the inning.
In that first inning, the Chargers hit 5 singles, took 7 walks and knocked out a double and a triple.
Cam Logan tripled, drove in 2 runs and scored twice, while Evan Kuhl, Nate Mayo and Robbie Vela all doubled.
Kuhl and Jordan Ballin scored twice, Jacob Schwope drove in 2 runs, Wyatt Chandler hit 2 singles, collected 2 RBI and scored a run, while Kuhl and Quinn Grable both pushed in 2 runs.
Schwope, Jackson Melanson and Garland Whitehead all tossed in the game with Schwope getting the win after he only gave up 1 hit in two innings of work, while striking out 4 and walking 3. Melanson also fanned 4 batters and Whitehead tossed 1 frame and sat down 1 batter.
