A three-run homer by Champion in the bottom in the sixth inning proved to be the difference in Tuesday’s district opener against New Braunfels Canyon at Charger Field.
Champion was trailing at the time, 3-1, but the three-run shot by Madison Hall gave the Chargers a 4-3 lead and they held on for the win after the Cougars didn’t score in the top of the seventh.
Champion is 1-0, both overall and in district, and is scheduled to play in the Kerrville Tivy tourney this weekend.
Canyon scored first with a single run in the top of the first inning, but the Chargers answered in the bottom of the second on a single by Lily Ritchie that scored Ava Trevino to tie it up at 1-1.
An error by the Chargers and two singles in the third allowed the Cougars to plate two runs and take a 3-1 advantage.
The lead held until the bottom of the sixth. Ashley Ottmers and Gabi Vela started off the inning with singles, but Canyon retired the next two batters for two outs and two on.
Hall came up and went down in the count 2-2 but jacked one out of the park over centerfield for the 3-run shot and the 4-3 lead.
Canyon still had one more at bat in the top of the seventh but went down in order with two infield pop ups and a ground out to end the game.
The Chargers finished with 6 hits after Hall homered and picked up 3 RBI and scored a run, Ottmers and Vela singled scored once, Trevino plated a run, Riley Murrish and Ritchie both singled and Ritchie picked up an RBI.
Carmen Vela was the winning pitcher and threw 114 pitches. She gave up 6 hits, 3 runs, 2 of them earned, while fanning 7 and walking 2.
