Ruth Elizabeth “Betty” Page Steubing
July 9, 1953 – February 14, 2022
Ruth Elizabeth “Betty” Page Steubing passed away at home in Boerne, Texas, on February 14, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born on July 9, 1953, in Auburn, Alabama, to Thomas Mansfield Page and Irene Orr Page. In 1971, Betty graduated from Huntsville High School in Huntsville, Texas. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education with a certification in bilingual studies from UTSA in 1978, then earned a master of education in curriculum and instruction from Texas Wesleyan University in 1998.
Betty began her teaching career in 1979, and by the time she retired in 2008 had taught language arts, English as a second language, reading, speech and theater in almost every grade from prekindergarten through high school, both in private and public schools in Junction, Boerne and Alamo Heights.
While teaching, Betty published numerous language arts and local historical teaching units, regularly worked extremely long days in her classrooms and at home and was involved in many student clubs. In 1993, she earned the very first Trinity University Excellence in Teaching Award given to any teacher outside of Bexar County.
After retirement, she worked harder than ever. She and Darrell began fostering and genuinely loving their foster kids, Taylor and Hunter Craig. Although not her children by blood, she again poured herself out completely and raised them to be wonderful adults.
When she was not teaching, taking her kids to swim meets, soccer, band practices, scout meetings, camps and church youth groups, she was reading, gardening, keeping a beautiful home, playing the ukulele with the UkeLadies & Gents, swimming with “The Manatees,” traveling to Venezuela, France and Israel, acting in community theaters, teaching Bible classes at St. John Lutheran Church and nearby assisted living facilities, ministering to women in jail, organizing and volunteering in grief support groups and comforting those in their final days.
Betty had an impact on countless students, colleagues, friends and family as she loved, challenged, motivated and inspired everyone. Her biggest competitor was herself. She taught her students and her own kids “Never be afraid you’ll work too hard; be afraid you won’t work hard enough,” “If a job is worth doing, it is worth doing right” and “Do your job correctly the first time so you don’t have to go back and do it again.”
Betty is survived by her husband of 47 years, Darrell Ray Steubing; daughter Krista and her husband, Clint Chandler; son William Steubing and his wife, Helena Hummel Steubing; grandchildren Finnegan, Colin and Luke Chandler; her father, Thomas Mansfield Page; and mother Irene Orr Page (Boerne); brother Thomas Page Jr. and wife Jacque Fitzpatrick Page (Rio Medina); sister Irene Page Robbins and husband Michael Robbins (La Coste); nieces Jana Page Urbanczyk, Kara Page Whittington, Kathryn Robbins and nephew Thomas Robbins; and a cherished extended family.
Betty was a kind, cheerful and friendly soul with deep faith and love, and she was beloved by her family and all who met her. She was a ray of sunshine who worked with a passion and challenged so many to follow her selflessness. Betty was absolutely remarkable.
