Phyllis Mary Childs

Phyllis Mary Childs

July 30, 1948 – February 10, 2022

Phyllis Mary Childs was released from this world on February 10, 2022, in Boerne, Texas. She was born to William Liberty Childs Jr. and Georgiana Szarkowski Childs on July 30, 1948, in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Phyllis lived most of her childhood in Houston with her parents and six siblings. There, she attended River Oaks Elementary, Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart and Lamar High. She briefly attended Greenbriar College in Gulfport, Mississippi.

It was at River Oaks Elementary that her fifth-grade teacher, noting her particular writing skills, made Phyllis class historian and alerted her to one of her greatest gifts. Throughout her life, Fifi wrote for her own pleasure and for the pleasure of family and friends. She also contributed articles to various in-house publications. She was the sibling who took the little ones to their events, and who taught them all to drive.

Her professional life was mostly as a legal assistant, but never found an occupation as nourishing as a day at the beach, a drive down the highway in her VW with the windows cranked down/music cranked up or a shared laugh and a beer with friends.

In 1985, Phyllis gave birth to the love of her life – her daughter, Georgiana (Jana) Mary Childs. The many cards, letters and activities to and concerning Jana attest to Phyllis's devotion to this cherished child. Always funny, Phyllis was a deeply spiritual person. She joined few religious organizations, but she contributed generously to several charitable organizations.

Phyllis Childs was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her daughter, Jana Childs Cox; her son-in-law, Ryan Cox, and their three daughters, Ava Marie Cox, Savannah Cox and Giana Ryan Cox. She is also survived by her siblings, Charlsie Childs, William Liberty Childs III, Georgiana Childs Duncan, John Henry Childs, Anne Frances Childs Dillon and Carl Robert Childs; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be planned for later in the year.

In lieu of flowers, charitable donations in Phyllis's honor may be made to San Antonio Food Bank at 5200 Enrique M. Barrera Pkwy, San Antonio, TX 78227 or Angelica Village of Colorado at 5455 W Virginia Ave, Lakewood, CO 80226.
