Members of the Boerne Champion and Boerne High swim/dive teams were at last week’s Region V-5A swim and dive meet in College Station and several of the Chargers earned spots at this coming weekend’s state swim and dive meet.
BHS had a total of five athletes compete at regionals, while Champion had 27 athletes at the meet where 32 schools had at least one representative there.
The Champion girls were third with 298 points, just behind Friendswood (310) and A&M Consolidated (301.5), while the Lady Greyhounds finished with 24 points for 17th.
The Charger boys were second with 317 points, just behind Georgetown with 339 points. The BHS boys scored 14 points for 17th.
Emma Haines was named the Girl’s Diver of the Meet, Alberto Escalante was one of three named the Girl’s Swimming Coach of the Year, while Escalante was also named the Girl’s Diving Coach of the Year.
Also at regionals, five school records were broken for the Chargers, one in diving and four in swimming, 22 medals were won, along with 27 ribbons, while 25 swimmers made it to the finals and 13 Chargers advanced to state in 13 events.
The top finisher in each event in the eight regions qualifies for state for eight automatic bids, but the next eight fastest, regardless of region, also make it to state for 16 that will head to Austin in each event.
