The Comfort High girls basketball team played a pair of district games over the weekend.
CHS hosted Blanco on Saturday in a make-up game from last Tuesday’s contest moved because of the inclement weather. They also played at Florence Friday and split the two games.
The Deer beat Florence but lost to Blanco and stands at 15-18 overall and 4-5 in District 5-3A. They hosted Ingram on Tuesday in the regular-season finale and a win by the Deer and a loss by Llano to Blanco guaranteed third place in the district for the Comfort girls.
Vs. Blanco
Blanco won Saturday’s matinee, 47-28. The Panthers scored in double digits all four quarters, while the Deer only reached double digits in one of the stanzas.
Blanco was winning 26-11 at halftime but the Deer outscored them in the third, 14-11, for its best quarter of the night and the Panthers lead was down to 12 points at 37-25 as the game went to the fourth.
Comfort couldn’t sustain the pace and only scored 3 in the fourth, while Blanco closed it out with 10 points to get the 19-point win.
Meghan Davis led the team with 12 points and 10 rebounds, Bailey Feldman scored 8, Lula Jaime had 4, while Jackie Zapata and Katie Haffner netted 2 points apiece.
Davis also came up with 3 steals, while Hernandez came up with 2 steals and 5 assists.
Vs. Florence
Comfort made the long drive to Florence and emerged with a 36-25 victory. The Deer had a good start and held a 12-4 lead after one but the Buffs outscored them in the second, 6-2, and their lead was down to four at 14-10 at the break.
The Deer won the final two periods, 9-4, and 13-11, to claim the 11-point win as seven different players scored in the game.
Bailey Feldman and Meghan Davis tied for team-high honors with 8 points, Jackie Zapata added 6, Katelyn Cook finished with 5, Emily Rivera netted 4, Jael Hernandez chipped in with 3 and Katie Haffner recorded 2 points.
