It’s been a while since the Boerne Champion boys basketball team was on the short end of the scoreboard but that’s what happened Tuesday night when the Chargers visited Wagner.

Champion led for a good portion of the game but the Thunderbirds came back at the end to edge the Chargers 52-49 and hand them only their second loss of the season.

Champion slips to 23-2 overall and 5-1 in district. They closed out the first round Friday against Veterans Memorial.

Before Tuesday, the Chargers last tasted defeat on Dec. 3 in the championship game of the Border Olympics Hoopsfest in Laredo when they lost to Alexander.

In Tuesday’s game, it looked like the Chargers were going to stay unbeaten in district and opened up a 24-13 lead thanks to a Braden Baum 3-pointer.

Wagner rallied and tied it at 37-37 in the second half, but a Baum dunk on a fastbreak put them on top, 39-37. From there, the Chargers pulled ahead 46-40 after another Baum 3-pointer, but the Thunderbirds outscored the Chargers down the stretch, 12-3, to secure the victory.

Baum had another solid game and finished with 29 points, Quinn Grable added 9 points, Charlie Georgelos scored 7 and Dakarai Hodge netted 4 as only four Chargers scored in the game.

Baum grabbed 11 rebounds and Georgelos dished out 5 assists.
