Texas is known for its wide open spaces. And when you are in Comfort, you don’t have to look very far to find them.
This month we will highlight two amazing spots just outside of Comfort that offer unique and varied activities, sights and amenities. You will want to add them to your “to-do’ list.
We will begin at Joshua Creek Shooting Ranch, where I received an informative and delightful tour from Blake Alexander. The Ranch, as it is commonly called, is situated on Cravey Road, about 12 miles outside of Comfort. There you will find 1,400 acres of a little bit of everything where terrain matters, as it most certainly does when you want to hunt!
Originally intended to be a longhorn cattle ranch, owners Joe and Ann Kercheville changed their plans after they fell in love with driven pheasant shooting in Scotland. And thus, Joshua Creek Shooting Ranch was born.
The Ranch offers bird hunting from October 1 through March 31, with more than one option for your hunting experience. In addition, Axis hunting is available year-round and white tail in season. Members and guests can also fly fish for trout. Imagine that! And there is a handgun shooting range and another for long-range rifles.
Perhaps you aren’t a hunter and so far, you are not intrigued. Ahh, but you don’t have to be a hunter to enjoy the Ranch!
You can spend a few days or a week and relish the luxury lodging and partake of chef’s choice breakfasts, lunches and dinners seven days a week with reservations. You can take a kayak trip on the Guadalupe River or a swim in the pool.
The facility includes four individual houses for private accommodations and two lodges with hotel-style rooms. All are over the top in style, comfort and amenities. And you are welcome to call for dining reservations whether you are an overnight guest or not.
You cannot help but be impressed with the facilities and layout of the Ranch! Be sure to check out its website at www.joshuacreek. com. And if you would like a personal tour, give Blake a call at 830-537-5090. You won’t regret it!
My next stop was just 3 miles down the road to Camp Capers. This camp is owned by the West Diocese of the Episcopal Church, and its primary mission is to provide a ministry of summer group camping. Just a few of the organizations that are served by Camp Capers include Cancer Recovery, Wounded Warriors and Helping Hands. And more good news is that the facility offers much that families, couples, individuals and businesses can enjoy.
Frank Palomino gave me a fantastic tour of the grounds and facilities located outside the base camp area, and then Lisa Wray delighted me with a look at all the rest.
The activities for summer campers are extraordinary. In addition to housing, dining, craft and worship spaces, there are outdoor opportunities that include a climbing wall, zipline, campfires, on-the-ground camping, river and pool swimming, basketball and volleyball, a labyrinth, Frisbee golf, hiking trails and more.
Now, you might be wondering what’s in this for you. Well, if you like the big outdoors or just a quiet place to retreat to, keep Camp Capers in mind.
The summer camping season goes from mid-May through mid-August, and that leaves nine months when the 208 acres are available to church groups, businesses of all sorts, families, couples and anyone interested in relaxing and retreating from the hubbub of everyday life.
There are 20 lodge rooms in the two main lodges, three houses, and the bunk-style cabins that can be rented during the non-camping season. This is a great place for family reunions, business conferences, retreats, banquets and getaway trips. Check out the website at [email protected], or call 830-995-3966.
So, till next time, remember that you can always find Comfort in Texas, and that Comfort includes a lot of wide open space!
