Boerne Champion remained perfect this year in district boys basketball after the Chargers earned a 19-point road win Friday in Seguin as Braden Baum scored 33 of their points.
Champion defeated the Matadors, 57-38, and bumps its record to 5-0 in 26-5A. The No. 6 state-ranked Chargers are 23-1 overall and continued league play Tuesday against Wagner. They’ll face Veterans Memorial on Friday.
The Chargers took charge in the opening quarter and built a 20-7 lead. Champion struggled in the second and only scored 2 points, while the Matadors dropped in 10 and the Chargers advantage was down to five at halftime, 22-17.
Champion corrected its course and had its best scoring quarter in the third with 22 points to match what they did in the entire first half. Seguin hit for 13 in the period to give the Chargers the 44-30 edge.
Champion closed it out by taking the fourth quarter, 13-8, to secure the victory.
Baum almost outscored the entire Seguin team by himself after he netted 33 points after sinking five 3s, going 8 for 8 at the line to go with five 2-pointers, while also grabbing 8 rebounds.
Charlie Georgelos dropped in a dozen points, Dakarai Hodge added 6, Mason Wyatt had 3, Baeden Burdick scored 2 and Quinn Grable hit a free throw.
Georgelos made it a double-double after he snagged 10 rebounds to go with his 12 points. He also added 4 assists, while Grable had 3 assists.
