A hot-shooting Smithson Valley boys basketball team gave Champion some problems early on in Tuesday’s district tussle, but the Chargers pulled away from the Rangers with a strong second half.

Champion claimed Tuesday’s victory, 68-44, and moved to 22-1 overall and 4-0 in district. The Chargers visited Seguin on Friday.

During the first half of Tuesday’s game, Smithson Valley knocked down seven 3-pointers, but the bad news for the Rangers was that they were still trailing by 8 points going into the half, 37-29.

Smithson Valley only made one 3-pointer in the second half and tallied just 15 points over the final two quarters, while the Chargers pulled away with 31 second-half points.

Braden Baum finished with 23 points to lead all scorers and was 3 for 6 from long range, while going 4 for 4 at the FT line.

Charlie Georgelos tallied 18 points and made a pair of 3s, while Dakarai Hodge gave the Rangers fits along the baseline and was the third Charger in double digits with 14 points.

Louis Hudspeth finished with 5 points, Jackson Marshall scored 4, while Quinn Grable and Baeden Burdick both netted 2 for the Chargers that were very good at the free-throwing line after going 15 for 18.

Georgelos grabbed 8 rebounds and Baum had 7 boards, Grable dished out 4 assists and Mason Wyatt had 3 assists.
