Both the Comfort boys and girls basketball teams fought through the painful loss of one of their classmates as they took to the court last Friday night Junior Manny Breceda, a manager for the boys basketball team and a band member, was found dead early Wednesday morning of an apparent seizure attack. He had seizure issues recently.

The loss of Breceda has left the entire community heartbroken but after prayers and discussions by both the Bobcat and Deer coaches and players it was decided to play on.

Comfort Deer

Reeling from the loss, the distracted Deer lost by 20 points to the Brady Bulldogs, 52-32, in their District 5-3A opener.

The Deer fell to 11-14 overall and 0-1 in District 5-3A play. They traveled to Llano on Tuesday.

Brady was up by 10 at the half after outscoring the Deer, 21-11, and then did the same in the second half after they outscored the Deer, 31-21, for the victory.

Jael Hernandez was the Deer’s leading scorer with 7 points, Katie Haffner and Meghan Davis both netted 6, Lula Jaime finished with 5, while Emily Rivera and Bailey Feldman both chipped in with 4.

Feldman grabbed 5 rebounds and Jaime came up with 4 steals and 3 assists.

Comfort Bobcats

The Bobcats fought through the painful loss as they hosted the Poteet Aggies on Friday.

Comfort was leading early but emotional fatigue helped the Aggies go on an 18-9 fourth-quarter run to win the game, 47-39.

With the setback, the Cats fall to 10-14 on the season. They will take Tuesday off before beginning district play Friday at Blanco.

Comfort was leading 16-8 after one quarter but the Aggies outscored them in the second to take the 20-17 halftime lead.

Poteet cut into the lead even more in the third after taking the quarter, 12-10, and the Bobcat lead was down to a point at 30-29 as the game went to the fourth quarter. But the Aggies blew it open in the final stanza after doubling up the Cats, 18-9.

Jaydin Steward led Comfort with 23 points, Joel Lozano added 6, Jovani Zapata had 3, while Terick Rodriguez, Landon Aguirre and Eli Gilliland all netted 2 and Aidan Schwarz made a free throw for a point.
