The cardiac Chargers were at it again on Friday night when the Champion girls basketball team hosted Pieper in 26-5A action.
For the second straight game, the Lady Chargers held off a late push by their opponents to record a victory.
In their previous game, the Chargers held on to defeat Kerrville Tivy and on Friday survived a scare from Pieper.
Champion saw a 17-point second half lead shrink to single digits before the Lady Chargers won it, 58-47.
The resilient Lady Chargers improve to 20-5 overall and 4-1 in district. They visited Smithson Valley on Tuesday and host Seguin on Friday to close out the first round.
Champion opened up a 17-point lead in the second half against Pieper but the Warriors cut it to eight points on several occasions but couldn’t get any closer as the Lady Chargers battled foul trouble.
Champion had 17 fouls called on them in the second half but overcome the quick whistles and the late Pieper push. The Warriors went to the line 25 times in the second half and 14 of their 22 fourth-quarter points came from free-throw shooting.
Champion was up 52-44 with 1:25 remaining and then Hudson Lonsdale helped carry them to the finish line after making two free throws to push the lead to 54-44.
After a Warriors FT made it 54-45, Lonsdale was fouled again and made one of two attempts at the line for the 55-45 advantage with 34.9 seconds and the lead never dipped below 10 points after that.
Lonsdale was 5 for 6 in the fourth quarter from the charity stripe for all her points in the game. Champion was 8 for 15 at the line in the fourth as they made enough free throws to keep the lead fluctuating from 8 to 10 points.
Madyson Marquard and Grace Erbstoesser led the team in scoring with 16 points apiece, with Erbstoesser scoring 8 of her 16 in the fourth quarter.
Addison Hankins finished with 8 points, Olivia Keilman added 7 and was 3 for 3 at the line, Christine McGinn added 3, Bralyn Gault had 2 and Ainsley Darter hit a free throw.
