The Boerne Champion boys opened its 2023 season at home on Tuesday afternoon and battled former district-foe Kennedy to a 1-1 tie.
Champion starts the year at 0-0-1 and held a boys alumni match on Friday after the girls alumni match. They’ll resume non-district action against Harlandale on Tuesday at home.
In Tuesday’s matinee match, the Chargers fell behind 0-1 in the first half, and it stayed that way until late in the contest when Champion hit the equalizer with 10 minutes left.
Alfredo Castellanos knocked in the Champion goal with 10:11 remaining on the clock to knot it up.
After that, Champion pressured the Rockets and had the ball deep in JFK territory a few times but couldn’t pull ahead as they missed on a few scoring opportunities.
Chargers coach Clifton Tierney said they’re a young team with six freshman and sophomores on the roster and called it a learning process.
“You could see we had some good cycles out there with our younger players. I’m happy that we’re getting opportunities, we’re doing good stuff, but we have to complete the job,” he said. “It’s tough because you have quality players and we have a lot of expectations, but with them being so young, that’s not happening yet, but it’s going to happen.”
Tierney said they’ll learn and grow and adjust as needed but also gave Kennedy credit for playing them tough.
“ They’re not a bad team, if they were in our district, they would be competitive,” he said. “ I saw some things that are going to steer me in the direction for the next game.”
