Boerne Champion struggled to close out Tuesday’s district basketball game in Kerrville Tivy, but the Lady Chargers found a way to get it done and held off the Lady Antlers.
Champion was winning 40-28 as the game went into the fourth quarter and Addison Hankins’ 2-points were the only points of the period but it was good enough for a 42-40 victory over Tivy.
Chargers coach Jason Sanders said he’ll take the win that improves his team to 19-5 overall and 3-1 in district. Champion, which entered the week ranked No. 19 in the 5A girls TABC poll, was at home Friday against Pieper before visiting Smithson Valley on Tuesday.
Tuesday’s tussle with Tivy was tied at 12-12 at the end of the first quarter but the Lady Chargers were consistent in the second and dropped in another 12 points, while the Lady Antlers only scored 4 points to give Champion a 24-16 halftime lead.
Once the second half started, the Lady Chargers turned in their best quarter of the night with 16 points with 6 points from Hankins and single 3s from Madyson Marquard and Olivia Keilman, while Adriana Barreiro added 4 points, but the Antlers stayed within striking distance and netted 12 points with 8 coming from Riley Dill.
Champion’s lead was 40-28 when the third period ended, but that’s when Tivy made their move. Kyra Wheatfall scored 8 of Kerrville’s points in the fourth quarter as the Lady Antlers outscored the Chargers 12-2, but the rally came up short and Champion held on for the 2-point win.
Marquard led the Chargers with 14 points, Hankins had 9, with 8 in the second half, Barreiro finished with 8 points, Hudson Lonsdale chipped in with 5, Keilman nailed a 3, Alivia Gonzales scored 2 and Grace Erbstoesser made a free throw as every point counted for the Lady Chargers.
