Charger boys win, stay in mix for 26-5A hoops title

Boerne Champion stayed in the mix for this year’s district title after the Chargers boys basketball team picked up a solid road win against a playoff team Tuesday night.

Champion visited Buda Johnson and defeated the Jaguars by 20 points, 55-35.

The Chargers improve to 26-6 overall and 13-2 in district. They close out the regular season Friday at New Braunfels Canyon and are off Tuesday.

Champion and Veterans Memorial both have two losses in district but the Patriots have swept the Chargers this year and own the tiebreaker.

Veterans Memorial still has two 26-5A games left and a loss to either Seguin on Friday or Kerrville Tivy on Tuesday would give them three district losses and help out the Chargers.

If Champion and Veterans Memorial end the regular season with two district losses, the Patriots are the No. 1 seed and the Chargers are No. 2.

Champion can slip to no lower than second so they’ll either be the No. 1 or 2 seed once the playoffs start.

In Tuesday’s game, Champion had three in double figures after Jesse Peart finished with 18 points, Braden Baum netted 13 and Owen Tate scored 12 after he hit four 3-pointers. Braxton Burdick finished with 9 points and Charlie Georgelos added 3 points.

Burdick grabbed 12 rebounds, Georgelos dished out 4 assists, while Peart had 3 assists and 6 rebounds.
