Beginning Friday night, the Texas Department of Transportation is scheduled to close both directions of Interstate 10 from Highway 46 to Highway 87 in Kendall County as crews demolish the existing Highway 46 bridge.
According to information from TxDOT, in order to safely remove the bridge crews will need about 56 hours of continuous full mainlane closures of both eastbound and westbound I-10 in Boerne. The removal of the bridge will allow crews to start working on the new westbound Highway 46 bridge.
The work is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. Friday, February 11, and is expected to be completed by 5 a.m. on Monday, February 14, weather permitting.
During the demolition and cleanup, the westbound mainlanes will be reduced to one lane and then directed to use exit 540 (Highway 46/ Bandera Road). Westbound frontage road traffic will continue through the Highway 46 intersection and enter mainlanes at the next available entrance ramp located near Frederick’s Creek.
The eastbound mainlanes will be reduced to one lane and then directed to use exit 540 (Highway 46/Bandera Road). Eastbound frontage road traffic will continue through the Highway 46 intersection and enter mainlanes at the next available entrance ramp located one-quarter mile west of the Highway 87 interchange.
For the safety of the traveling public, the active bridge on Highway 46 over I-10 will be closed, TxDOT stated. All traffic will be required to turn right onto the frontage roads. Off-duty uniformed officers will be onsite to assist with traffic control at the SH 46 intersection.
Westbound Highway 46 traffic will be detoured to westbound I-10, to the Johns Road intersection and back to exit 540 (Highway 46). Eastbound Highway 46 traffic will be detoured to the eastbound frontage road, onto the eastbound I-10 mainlanes and to exit 543 (Scenic Loop Road) where traffic will use the turnaround to reach the westbound frontage road into Boerne/Main Street.
The closures are part of scheduled work on the I-10 Kendall Extension project. The project includes frontage road and overpass improvements along I-10 from Highway 46 to Fair Oaks Parkway in Kendall County.
