Boerne High hosted Davenport Tuesday at Greyhound Gym to open District 27-4A girls basketball action.
The Lady Hounds played some stout defense and held the Lady Wolves to just 23 points on its way to a 54-23 victory.
BHS starts district at 1-0 and improves to 14-1 overall. Boerne played Bandera in a game moved to Saturday morning to accommodate those Greyhound fans who attended Friday’s state championship football contest between Boerne and China Spring.
The Lady Hounds smothered Davenport and didn’t give up more than six points in any of the four quarters. The Wolves hit 5, 6, 6 and 6 in the each of the periods.
BHS coach Amy Ruede said the team played strong defensively and it helped when her squad struggled on the offensive end.
“I’m excited about the win, we played well on defense, but we forced stuff on offense and missed some wide-open lay ups,” she said. “We just have to finish that stuff around the rim.”
BHS was up 8-5 in the middle of the first quarter but went on a 13-0 run to end the stanza and take a 21-5 lead into the second.
BHS only scored 9 in the second but still outscored the Wolves, 9-6, and held a 30-11 advantage at halftime.
Boerne didn’t score in the final 2:25 of the second and went scoreless in the first 3:55 of the third for a scoring drought of 6:20 that bridged the second and third quarters, but they still outscored the Wolves in both quarters mainly because of their defense.
When they are struggling offensively, Ruede said they just have to stay with it.
“We just have to be patient and not force stuff, because if we run through our offense, we’re going to get good looks,” she said. “That’s one of the things we’ve emphasized in practice. If we trust what we practice, we don’t have to bail out of stuff and play one-on-one basketball, we’re going to be able to score.”
Once Boerne came out of its scoring drought in the third, they finished the quarter by outscoring Davenport, 13-5, with all 13 points coming from Averi Aaron (8) and Jamie Ruede (5) for the commanding 43-17 lead.
The Lady Hounds closed out the game by winning the fourth quarter, 11-6, despite Coach Ruede taking out most of her starters.
Jamie Ruede finished with 21 points and hit four 3s, while Aaron tallied 20 points as the two combined for 41 of the team’s 54 points.
Abby Smith chipped in with 4 points, Chloe Donnell netted 3, while Savannah Salinas, Sushanna Cobb and Mickena Randle all scored 2.
