Boerne Champion didn’t have the kind of start to district play they were hoping when the Lady Chargers visited Wagner on Tuesday to begin 26-5A action.
The Lady Chargers played the Lady Thunderbirds close but Wagner went on to record the 57-48 victory. Champion drops to 12-4 overall and opens district at 0-1. The Chargers host Veterans Memorial on Saturday, 3 p.m., in a game moved from Friday to Saturday since the district was closed Friday because the BHS football team was playing in the state finals.
Wagner had a good start and was leading 14-6 after one, but the Chargers got on track after that and hit in double digits the final three quarters but couldn’t catch the Thunderbirds.
Wagner won the second stanza, 19-15, and held a 33-21 advantage at halftime.
Champion won the third quarter, but only by a point, 11-10, and the score was 43-32 headed into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Chargers again outscored Wagner but it was only by 2 points this time, not enough to make up the deficit and the Thunderbirds went on to record the 9-point win.
Addison Hankins led the Chargers in scoring with 13 points, while Adriana Barreiro was also in double figures with 11 points. Olivia Keilman added 7 points after hitting a pair of 3s and a free throw, Grace Erbstoesser and Madyson Marquard tallied 5 points apiece, Hudson Lonsdale netted 4 and Bralyn Gault finished with 3 points.
NOTES: In Champion’s 60-30 win over Cuero last Saturday, four Lady Chargers were in double figures after Adriana Barreiro finished with 14 points, Madyson Marquard added 11, while Addison Hankins and Olivia Keilman scored 10 apiece. Taylor Burk netted 5, Bralyn Gault and Grace Erbstoesser both tallied 4 and Kayla Ramirez chipped in with 2.
