The Genealogical Society of Kendall County named the first winner of its Ed Mergele Award for History. Author Janice Hosking Brazil was honored for her book, “Voices Among the Leaves, An American History As Seen From Our Family Tree.” Brazil was presented with an engraved crystal trophy and cash award during the society’s January meeting.

“The essence of a great history is to tell a compelling, interesting story, and Brazil does this in spades,” presenter Dick Tomlinson said. “She presents the stories of 90 relatives in a readable first-person style and relates their life experiences to the events of their times. This is done with realism and humility that reflects deep research and a broad knowledge of history. I don’t know a more entertaining way to gain an appreciation of the past.”

The Genealogy Society of Kendall County has established awards for publications of outstanding value in genealogy, history or as a research resource. The awards are named in honor of long-time local author and historian, Ed Mergele.Br
